China And US Torture Prisoners Together

Aren't we all just SOOOO proud of America these days?

"..It's a tale bizarre enough to make Rush Limbaugh blush: intelligence agents from communist China invited to an American military base, where they're allowed to torture political dissidents in American custody, with American soldiers as their sidekicks. In light of China's crackdown on Tibet during the run-up to the Olympics, it's a tasty news tidbit. But it didn't run in The Times--as far as I can tell, it only ran in one newspaper, the Christian Science Monitor..."

"..the U.S. government admitted that it has more than 500 children in its torture and concentration camps. More than 2,500 children have gone through U.S. secret prisons since 2002, including at least eight at Guantánamo.."

Walt Whitman Has A Posse

Happy Birthday Walt Whitman:
(May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892)

A Noiseless Patient Spider
by: Walt Whitman
A noiseless patient spider,
I mark'd where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark'd how to explore the vacant, vast surrounding,
It launched forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself.
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detatched, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them.
Till the bridge you will need be form'd, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul.

OoTM Book Club | Cauldron, and A Thousand Splendid Suns

It's been tough to get a few moments to attend the Blog in the last few days. Before I get away and do something else I'll throw up a few things. I haven't mentioned anything I've been reading for a while. I'm always reading assorted magazines, and I also tend to go through a couple of books a month. I just finished two. No I'm not going to give you a LONG review of them. I'll give you my quick take on them, my rating and point you to a good review I agree with:

The first is Jack McDevitt's "Cauldron",

Oh, Snap..It's a Space opera type Science Fiction. Sixth in a series apparently and I hadn't read the others. I give it a 3 on my five scale. The action scenes were fine. It just took to long to get to them and they were to short. I had a few other problems with it but overall it was certainly worth the read.

The SciFi Weekly Book Review for "Cauldron".

The second book is Khaled Hosseini's "A Thousand Splendid Suns":

Really nothing to complain about here. An excellent read. If you liked his previous book "The Kite Runner" you'll certainly love this one and if you didn't you'll probably still like it. You follow two lives through nearly the last thirty years of afghanistan's history. Painful at times but you'll be glad you read it and won't want to put it down till done. My rating, 4 out of 5.

Scott McClellan Tells Us What We Already Knew

Bushco's former press secretary Scott McClellan joins the list of former insiders who amazingly find their conscience after leaving the compound and while shopping a book. I saw a review this morning on the Today Show and it's pretty much everything we in the "Reality Based Community" could have told you in 2003. The only thing I strenuously disagree with Scotty on is his pushing the idea that Bush's Iraq war was a massive blunder. It was to the world at large but to Bushco, I don't think so. Their corporate partners are still raking in massive profits, they're STILL looting the US treasury, everything being cut but the war machine.
Ignore Scott McClellan. It's to little, and Waaay to late.
Scotty that blood on your hands won't come off. You're forever a member of the war criminal administration.

Phoenix Lander Parachuting To Martian Surface

The orbiting Mars Reconnaissance craft snapped this picture of the Phoenix lander parachuting to the Martian surface. Glowing for the camera from the heat of entering the Martian atmosphere. This is the first picture taken from a spacecraft of another craft landing on another planet.

"From a distance of about 310 kilometers (193 miles) above the surface of the Red Planet, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter pointed its HiRISE obliquely toward Phoenix shortly after it opened its parachute while descending through the Martian atmosphere. The image reveals an apparent 10-meter-wide (30-foot-wide) parachute fully inflated. The bright pixels below the parachute show a dangling Phoenix. The image faintly detects the chords attaching the backshell and parachute. The surroundings look dark, but corresponds to the fully illuminated Martian surface, which is much darker than the parachute and backshell."

Kentucky Senate Race | Lunsford Leads McConnell By Five!

Well, well. Can we say BUH-BUH BYE Mitch?

....

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of the Kentucky Senate race shows Democratic challenger Bruce Lunsford with a five percentage point lead over long-time Republican Senator Mitch McConnell. The poll, conducted just two days after Lunsford won the Democratic nomination, shows the challenger with 49% of the vote while McConnell earns 44%.

These results stand in stark contrast to the Presidential race in Kentucky—John McCain leads Barack Obama by twenty-five percentage points. However, just 67% of McCain voters currently plan to vote for McConnell. Twenty-eight percent (28%) of McCain voters say they will split the ticket and vote for Lunsford. Recognizing the overall political dynamic, McConnell issued a statement last week indicating that he is looking forward to running against the “Lunsford-Obama plan for America."

Freedom Riders | Wingnuts On Two Wheels?

Just a Note:
I think I've found a good chunk of that 28-29% of the American public that thinks George W. Bush is doing a bang-up job as Prez-dent. I sat down this evening to finish the newspaper and the wife had left the local news on. As I started reading the paper the announcer says: "That's all, have a good evening and stay tuned for NBC National News". I thought: Uh Oh, and looked around for the remote. Sure enough there it is across the room. I think to myself, well..I'll just keep on reading, they can't do anything to annoy me that quick? NBC started telling me about a HUUUGE biker protest in Washington DeeCee by the "Freedom Riders motorcycle club" for Veteran's rights and to support our military. Wow I thought, I hope "dumbya's" out of town these guys might just string him up. Then NBC gravely tells me that these "Freedom Rider" guys -that are just doing their damnest to support our military and veterans- were also going to give a leather coat of appreciation to...George W. Bush..! WTF! As you can imagine my jaw hit the floor, newspaper forgotten I stumbled across the room for the blessed remote. Trying to ignore the images of the "Freedom Riders" giving a fine leather coat of appreciation to the guy who has decimated our military with a false war, profiteering cronies, and overall indifference(except for photo ops). The guy who just a few days ago tried to have the new GI bill giving veterans a college education thrown out. The guy who's taking the finest army in history and laying it to waste. There's not enough room on the Internets to describe the damage George W. Bush has done, in everything he's touched. What he's done to our military(and country) for his corporate profits war in Iraq should be a war crime. The "Freedom Riders" think dubya's one helluva good ol' boy. That's all I need to know about the Freedom Riders.

I prefer these Freedom Riders.

She Didn't Mean It The Way It Sounded

I think Hillary Clinton was trying to make a profound point on why she was still in the race. Edward Kennedy's recent hospitalization was at the back of her mind and she suddenly had a brain lock.
Terribly unfortunate choice of words. I worry about Barack Obama anyway, especially if after he gets the nomination. I think people were especially shocked because a lot of other people are worried also and her comment exposed that fear. You have to worry for any candidate, especially when they become their party's candidate for President. I don't worry so much for Hillary, she'll be fine. Obama is apparently our nominee now and there are a LOT of violent crazies out there and a LOT of them are racists.
With the recent terrible news regarding Edward Kennedy, the last of the "Camelot" Kennedy brothers fast approaching mortality. It brought up a terrible National memory. Strange and scary choice of words.

Pirate's Booty

"I'll be honest: I didn’t follow all the Disney rules. I played Jack like he was real, and if a woman flirted, I would flirt back. Women loved it. But there were also women who would have too many beers at California Adventure or smuggle in alcohol you could smell on their breath, women who were clearly sloshed.

Here’s a napkin someone wrote on for me: “I will give you a blow job on your break, so sexy! Kim—714-XXX-XXXX.” I would also get offers from women in my ear: “Anything you want, just find me.” I had a girl who had turned 18 the day before. She was with a high school group, and she wrote down her room number at the Downtown Disney hotel. I had a lady hump my leg one day in the park.."

"Barack Black Eagle" | Obama Adopted By Crow Indians

From WAPO.

Photo: Reuters

Obama Adopted Into Crow Nation

CROW AGENCY, Mont. -- Sen. Barack Obama became the first American presidential candidate to visit the reservation of the Crow Nation and in doing so was adopted into the nation under the Crow name "One Who Helps People Throughout the Land."

Drums pounded and the crowd cheered as Obama was escorted to the podium by his "new parents," Hartford and Mary Black Eagle, in the manner of a groom being walked down the aisle. Obama beamed. His adoptive parents gave Obama hugs as he stepped onto a riser to speak.

"I want to thank my new parents," he said. "The nicest parents you could ever want to know. I like my new name. Barack Black Eagle. That is a good name!"

For all the symbolism -- members of the tribe wore colorful traditional clothing and feathered head-dresses -- Obama addressed some issues of serious concern not only to the 12,100-member Crow Nation but to many Native American tribes around the country.

Obama told those gathered that he intended to acknowledge the "tragic history" of Native Americans over the past three centuries. They "never asked for much, only what was promised by the treaty obligations of their forebears," he said, promising to honor those treaties.

Moreover, he pledged to bring sorely needed "quality affordable health care and a world-class education to reservations all across America. That will be a priority when I'm president."

Holy Joe Lieberman Pleads For Censorship

Republican wannabe Joe Lieberman, DemocratIndependent tries to get YouTube to censor their videos of things which he doesn't approve. YouTube politely tells him to take it to the comments:

"..Senator Lieberman stated his belief, in a letter sent today, that all videos mentioning or featuring these groups should be removed from YouTube — even legal nonviolent or non-hate speech videos. While we respect and understand his views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view. We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds. Of course, users are always free to express their disagreement with a particular video on the site, by leaving comments or their own response video.."

Herald-Leader Endorses Barack Obama

The Lexington Herald-Leader endorsed Barack Obama yesterday. It's amazing to me that this campaign is still going on. Unlike many that doesn't really bother me. The Republicans are easily confused and it's like a tag team on crazy ol' John McCain. It's all pretty much wrapped up for Barack Obama though, and Kentucky(as usual) doesn't matter much.

--
Democrats should choose Obama
Ill. senator suited to lead U.S. into future

"So, before Kentuckians go to the polls Tuesday in one of the last primaries, let's just pause to savor this moment in history: For the first time in 232 years of nationhood, an African-American or a woman will lead a presidential ticket.

That alone makes this election a hopeful turning point.

The opportunity for national renewal will be even greater if, as appears almost certain, Sen. Barack Obama is the nominee.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has waged a tough campaign. Her experience and mastery of the challenges facing the next president are impressive. So is her ability to connect with voters. She has emerged as a political force in her own right, outside the orbit of her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Both Democrats are more than qualified to be president."

"There are hybrids. There are electric cars that plug into a wall and get their juice from whatever mix the electric company is offering. And then there are electic cars that are charged by solar panels on the roof of one's house. They never need gas, and the power is free after the set-up cost..."

Inherent Contempt Citation For Rove?

Here's a portion of a letter I received from Congressman Robert Wexler(D, 19th, Fla.). Of course talking about holding these people accountable and doing it are two different things.
--

Last night, I appeared on MSNBC's Verdict with Dan Abrams to discuss Karl Rove's outrageous refusal to appear before Congress regarding serious allegations that he used the US Justice Department to take down a prominent Democratic politician. It is alleged that Mr. Rove personally instigated the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegleman. The case has been criticized by legal experts, and 52 former state attorney generals ? both Republicans and Democrats ? have criticized the case and called for an investigation. (You may view the clip here.)

If Rove refuses to testify voluntarily and ignores the subpoenas that will certainly be issued, he should be held in Inherent Contempt of the House of Representatives.

No American is above the law. None of us should be able to ignore Congress without consequence. If Mr. Rove ignores a subpoena from the Judiciary Committee, then the House of Representatives should pass an Inherent Contempt citation and exercise our right to send the House Sergeant-of-Arms to gather Mr. Rove and bring him before Congress to testify.

I do not advocate this option lightly, but the reality is that Congress has few options left against an Administration that totally refuses to submit to any type of reasonable Congressional oversight. Congress has both the right and obligation to investigate these matters. Never before has an Executive so upset the checks and balances inherent in our Constitution. If we back off or delay, we effectively forfeit the power of Congress to investigate the Executive branch.

Rove is not the first White House official to ignore Congress. We have seen a pattern of refusals based on laughable claims of executive privilege. First, White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers ignored subpoenas on the investigation into the firing of US Attorney Generals for partisan political motives.

Their refusal to testify was unprecedented: never before have executive officials totally refused to even show up before Congress. Bolten and Miers are the highest officials ever held in contempt of Congress. Unfortunately, Attorney General Mukasey ? in a dereliction of duty ? has refused to enforce the contempt decree and now Congress is suing them in District Court to demand compliance. Then, the Vice President's Chief of Staff, David Addington, refused to testify on the investigation into the Bush Administration's ordering of torture. Now, Rove continues this executive arrogance by also refusing to testify.

Enough is enough. We have a Constitutional obligation to provide accountability to a White House that is trying usurp the constitutional powers of Congress.

These are the very reasons why I have been pushing for impeachment hearings for Vice President Cheney. The Bush Administration has been running roughshod over the Constitution for eight long years. We should not allow the promise of a positive election be used as an excuse to ignore our duty to investigate crimes that weaken the very fabric of our Democracy.

I thank you again for your commitment to the causes that we hold so dear.

With warm regards,

Congressman Robert Wexler

Cindy McCain's Tax Returns

At least the newspapers have begun to notice that Cindy McCain, wife and sponsor of husband John "Transparency" McCain is refusing to release her tax records.

"IT WON'T DO." That was our bottom line in 1984 when Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York, Democratic vice presidential candidate, balked at releasing her husband's income tax returns. Ms. Ferraro ultimately relented. It was our bottom line four years ago, when Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of the Democratic nominee, refused to release her returns; Ms. Kerry relented as well. And it is just as apt now with regard to Cindy McCain's tax returns.

Passerby; You've probably already seen this little item, but if not you have to. It's the otherworldly, Onion worthy humour of the Republican party. They've got themselves a new slogan.
After having nearly complete political control of the federal government for- Oh..let's see, pretty much this whole 21st century(so far), their new slogan is, TA DA! "The Change You Deserve"(cue the trumpets)! That's right, the party of dubya, the most hated President in this country's history and Dick "Dick" Cheney have come up with a slogan for...CHANGE.
Wait, that's funny but it gets better, "The Change You Deserve" was actually stolen from the slogan for the anti-depresent drug Effexor; For the treatment “of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in adults.”
The party of Rove and dubya reduced to stealing catch phrases from drug companies. It's worthy of the Onion. Almost makes me feel bad for the party of war, environmental degredations, skyrocketing budget deficits and soooo much more. It's good they still got the "Liberal" media in their corner.

Kentucky | Always On The Hindquarters Of Progress

An interesting article in the Lexington(Kentucky) paper today. Hillary Clinton leads Obama by nearly twenty percentage points in a recent poll. That's not the scary part, the scary part is that either one of them trails this guy:

Crazy "Pops" McCain

By double digits right now if the election were held today. So at this point in time the majority of my (always)backward state believe that the last eight years of Bushco disaster were just hunky dory and they want more.
It really is an amazing state of ignorance, where the "sheeple" get their news from Faux and CNN and then curl up to watch American Idol.
It does a lot to explain why Kentucky is always the tail end of progressive ideas and why our economy, schools, environment, etc. will remain in the toilet and why we'll never be on the leading edge of anything. As with the latest state budget fiascos(Not helped by the Democratic Guv) my heart grieves for the Kentucky that might have been.

The US Drug War Menace Marches On

Rarely will you hear common sense or actual facts regarding marijuana in the US corporate News Media. Unfortunately even the National left leaning Blogs rarely cover the subject for that matter. What you will hear are horror stories like these two creeps. Because those stories feed the Federal/corporate propaganda effort on behalf of the disatrous drug war. Here's a few headlines that should be aired and debated across the country but won't because of the ingrained fear of opinion and government.

Five signs that pot might become legal soon -- and five reasons why it probably won't.

Why is marijuana illegal?

Low-dose pot eases pain while keeping mind clear

Etc.

Trailer: FAUBOURG TREMÉ

Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans.

Shot largely before Hurricane Katrina and edited afterwards, the film is both celebratory and elegiac in tone. Faubourg Tremé is arguably the oldest black neighborhood in America, the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement in the South and the home of jazz. While the Tremé district was damaged when the levees broke, this is not another Katrina documentary. Every frame is a tribute to what African American communities have contributed even under the most hostile of conditions..

Pentagon Propaganda Documents Now Online

From prwatch.org
Don't hold your breath for the happily complicite corporate "News" networks to report on this

----
Eight thousand pages of documents related to the Pentagon's illegal propaganda campaign, known as the Pentagon military analyst program, are now online for the world to see, although in a format that makes it impossible to easily search them and therefore difficult to read and dissect. This trove includes the documents pried out of the Pentagon by David Barstow and used as the basis for his stunning investigation that appeared in the New York Times on April 20, 2008.
The Pentagon program, which clearly violated US law against covert government propaganda, embedded more than 75 retired military officers -- most of them with financial ties to war contractors -- into the TV networks as "message surrogates" for the Bush Administration. To date, every major commercial TV network has failed to report this story, covering up their complicity and keeping the existence of this scandal from their audiences.

Matt Taibbi | Undercover In Jesus Hagee-Land

Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi goes undercover to investigate the church of John Hagee. You know the hateful wingnut Reverend adored by Grandpa McCain and ignored by the MSM.

--
Jesus Made Me Puke
Matt Taibbi Undercover with the Christian Right

I had joined Cornerstone — a megachurch in the Texas Hill Country — to get a look inside the evangelical mind-set that gave the country eight years of George W. Bush. The church's pastor, John Hagee, is one of the most influential evangelical preachers in the country — not because his ministry is so very large (although he claims up to 4.5 million viewers a week for his Sunday sermons) but because of his near-absolute conquest of a very trendy niche in the market: Christian Zionism.

The whole idea behind Christian Zionism is to align America with the nation of Israel so as to "hurry God up" in his efforts to bring about Armageddon. As Hagee tells it, only after Israel is involved in a final showdown involving a satanic army (in most interpretations, a force of Arabs led by Russians) will Christ reappear. On that happy day, Hagee and his True Believers will be whisked up to Heaven by God, while the rest of us nonbelievers are left behind on Earth to suck eggs and generally suffer various tortures.

New York Times | White House Stenographers

Along with their Neo-con "Iraq Panels" they're still(like those during Bushco's run-up to the war on Iraq) running White House articles on their front pages. Here's Glenn Greenwald:

"..The administration has no better ally in disseminating its war-provoking accusations than Michael Gordon and his NYT Editors, for whom "reporting" consists of repeating whatever Bush officials say -- no matter how significant or dubious -- and to do so without challenge and while baselessly granting them anonymity to make their provocative accusations without accountability.."
Shocking? No more so than CNN(Conservative News Network) hiring more Bush Trolls for their corporate Faux-Lite "News" channel.

Anniversary Of The Kent State Massacre

I've been super busy this weekend. With family stuff, yard and home, and going in to the office today there's not been much time left for De Blog, but here I am again. The good thing about being a...shall we say "z" list Hobby-Blogger,is I can be gone a few days and like that tree falling in the forest with no one around to hear it, does anyone really give a crap, or something like that. I'm not really missed but I still hang in there and throw up things of interest along the way. I do admire the people who have all that time to put in to it. Speaking of which, I saw that today's the anniversary of those bastards killing our kids at Kent State.
I still remember the anger and horror I felt reading about it in the newspaper in my school Library(Oneida Baptist Institute) the next day and thinking the SOBs are killing us now. Neil Young came out with "Ohio" within a few days and Nixon's war was doomed.
