Happy Halloween | Witch Head Nebula | PHN MRI

I had an MRI done last night for the shingles/PHN numbness and pain in my right arm and shoulder. This crap has been, and will be a life changing event till it's finally (fingers crossed) gone.
Someday soon I'm going to try and do a conversation about this thing I'd heard of but never experienced till now. Chronic pain, and all those people out there that you see every day who have to live with it. Speaking of which I'm sitting here at work with my hand on an ice pack.
Between the PHN, work and everything else I've had trouble keeping up with the ol' Blog here. Doesn't matter much except to me though, so moving along.
While I have a few moments here's something good for halloween. The Witch Head Nebula looks at the stars:

Have a safe All Hallow's Eve and a nice weekend. I should be back later...??

Quote of the day for yesterday:
"Joe's with us today, Joe, where are you? Where is Joe? Is Joe here with us today? Joe, I thought you were here today."
John McCain, at a bussed in rally in Ohio, calling for Joe the plumber(who's real name isn't Joe and who's not a plumber but who is probably the luckiest man in America at this moment).
Sadly Joe stood Johnie up.

Danny Glover | Obama: The Lesser of Two Evils?

From the Real News Network:

Danny Glover has been very critical of the policy stances that Barack Obama has taken in his campaign for President. Despite this, Danny is about to go campaign on his behalf in swing state Nevada. Paul asks Danny how he reconciles this state of imbalance. Danny also discusses the importance of third party candidates, even while not voting for them, of getting their ideas out there.

McCain Campaign Official | "An Epidemic of Incontinence"

Hi travelers...I'm finally back.
It's been a decidedly bad day for the McCain campaign and for the Republican brand in general. I did something tonight that I haven't done in a long time. I sat and watched the "news" and a long night of the "talking heads" tv. It was NBC News, MSNBC and the comedy Channel and not FOX OR CNN. I'm drowsy and recuperating not a Democratic masochist.
Nope, NOT a good day for the Bush/McCain/Palin brand Republicans.
Where to begin the list?
Sarah and "First dude" testify under oath about Troopergate

McCain's brother call's 9-11 over a traffic jam and say's "F*ck you" to the operator

The McCain campaign worker admits to making up the whole story about being robbed, attacked, fondled and face-carved by a large, black obama supporter

The FOX News head who said if that story proved to be a "hoax" it would be the end of the McCain campaign

We find out that Palin's make-up artist made $22,500.00 in 2 weeks

Sarah Palin ridiculed scientific(fruit fry) research, such research has proven to be critical in the study of autism

More major National Republicans give their support to Obama

And more..

Now THAT'S change we can believe in my friends...!!

The sweet thing about all this is the arrogance of these guys back when they had a lock on the Federal government. Like Enron and now the Banking Industry there was no thought that it would end. Just a few short years ago they were certain that they and DUH-bya were creating a Republican empire to last for generations
.

A lot can happen in a short week(attack on Iran?), but tonight I'm celebrating the gloom and despair of the neo-con machine right now. They're like the Keystone Cops(OLD reference) right now and hopefully they'll stay that way.
Heres a few sweet words from one of those neo-con just a few short years ago:

"We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
(see my little declaration in "About Me" at the top of this page.)

Oh, and the pic of Sarah campaigning with a "Vote Democratic donkey" scarf on. Was that just ignorance, or employee subterfuge? who knows, and who cares. It's been a hugely entertaining campaign. They have 1 week to turn it around.

Barack's Grandparents

Been busy all evening. Had to take daughter Brittany to the doctor, she's caught something flu-like. Wife Ellen's working so with 4 dogs, 2 guiniea pigs, 2 birds and all, I've been BUSY.
But, just a moment to post this old pic of Barack Obama's maternal grandparents. You can see where Obama gets the ears. Look at his grandfather. His grandmother is now gravely ill and he's pausing his campaigning to go to Hawaii to visit her.

I found the photo at Ta-Nehisi's place along with this wonderful write-up about racial relations in America today and about the white mothers and grandparents who have helped lead the way closer to a more color-blind society.

Campaign Turns Ugly

Funny stuff:

The Campaign is Getting Ugly

GM: OK, the bugbear attacks you. What do you do?

OBAMA: I send one of my 672 henchmen after it.

MCCAIN: OK, seriously. Why does he have so many henchmen? I'm a level 72 ranger and he's only a level 8 paladin.

OBAMA: Well, if you'd bought the Grassroots Organizing and Oratory/Colgate Smile proficiencies you could min max it so that you...

MCCAIN: Why is he even IN this campaign? I thought this was supposed to be a high level party.

OBAMA: Well, maybe some people got tired of the grim and squinty "Matterhorn, son of Marathon" shtick you keep doing. Dude, could you be any less original?

MCCAIN: Oh my god, I did not leave my left nut in a tiger cage in the Tomb of Horrors to spend my Friday nights mopping up after the new kid.

OBAMA: "My friends, I am a totally unoriginal grizzled character class stereotype. I should lead the party because I have more testicular damage than that one."

MCCAIN: Yeah, well, you pal around with dark elves.

OBAMA: OH NO YOU DIDN'T...
Go..

Thanks Tiger.

Colin Powell Endorses Obama

On Meet The Press. It's not much of a shocker because it had already been rumoured.
I've never been much of a Colin Powell fan. His whorish routine at the UN for the Bushco attack on Iraq was the clincher. On the other hand many people still admire the guy especially on the conservative side:

Also The Lexington Herald-Leader endorsed Obama today.

Note: I do agree with Juan Cole that this might be one of Colin Powell's finer moments, if only for his take on the "Obama may be a muslim" McCain attack.
Anyway here's Colin Powell, and tell me if you don't think he's earned just a tiny bit of redemption:

"..I'm also troubled by, not what Senator McCain says, but what members of the party say. And it is permitted to be said such things as, "Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim." Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim, he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing that he or she could be president? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion, "He's a Muslim and he might be associated terrorists." This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

I feel strongly about this particular point because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay was of a mother in Arlington Cemetery, and she had her head on the headstone of her son's grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone. And it gave his awards--Purple Heart, Bronze Star--showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death. He was 20 years old. And then, at the very top of the headstone, it didn't have a Christian cross, it didn't have the Star of David, it had crescent and a star of the Islamic faith. And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, and he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he can go serve his country, and he gave his life. Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourself in this way. And John McCain is as nondiscriminatory as anyone I know. But I'm troubled about the fact that, within the party, we have these kinds of expressions.."

Update: I did say a tiny bit of redemption. But I really hope that Barack Obama's statements about Colin Powell being an advisor in his administration should he win are just crazy "bi-partisan" election talk. I don't consider Powell a war criminal like I do Cheney/Bush, etc. but it's a really fine line.

"..give a $5000 check to the insurance companies and leave families on their own to figure out how to cover the rest of the $12,000 family plan premium, strip away consumer protections by letting companies sell across state lines, and force 20 million out of employer-based health insurance and leave them vulnerable to not being able to get coverage at all in the individual market because of pre-existing conditions.."

Iraq: Death From Friendly Fire

A recent video obtained by Salon proves that American soldiers killed in a firefight were actually killed by fire from an American tank. Here's an edited clip:

"..Shot from the perspective of the soldiers taking fire from what they clearly believe is an American tank, the footage shows how Pfc. Albert Nelson and Pfc. Roger Suarez-Gonzalez died. It also records soldiers trying to save Nelson’s life, and the sound of a platoon sergeant attempting to report over a radio that the casualties were due to friendly fire. He then seems to be overruled by a superior officer who insists it was an enemy mortar attack. Troops from Nelson’s unit interviewed by Salon, including three soldiers there that day, blamed friendly fire from a U.S. tank for the deaths. “A tank shot us,” said a soldier. “That is what happened..”

Posting Slipping Away | Meet The Herpes Zoster "Shingles" Virus

This Just In: Post herpetic neuralgia sucks!
My posts have decreased from 2-3 a day to about 1 or so lately, probably even less. Not that the Internet crowds notice or care. This Blog from the very beginning has always been a hobby for me, and a way of sharing art, science, politics and other interests of mine. You might call it a mishmash journal. Certainly not close to an occupation like the A and B list Bloggers, my family would have starved long ago.

Being at work right now and still in some severe pain shows that "taking off" that work is not much of an option either.

While I'm here and cruising the Nets at lunch I wanted to throw up this micron photo of the little booger that's been kicking my ass. Ladies and germs meet the varicella zoster virus(shingles):

Photo: Here

It seems like this pain and nightmare has been ongoing forever but I checked the calender this morning and it hasn't even been a month yet since the onset of the shingles leading to this. Hopefully this sh*t will gradually be gone in the near future as it is with around 75% of people who contract PHN. Otherwise it's going the be the life-altering nightmare it is, and that I'm so afraid of.
On to your regular surfing. In chronic pain world I'll continue typing left-handed. Down With PHN!

An Alaskan Writer's View Of Sarah Palin

I haven't been able to post much the last little while with this shingles/post-herpetic neuralia crap still kicking my ass. I'm down to typing with my left hand(I'm right handed). But I am going to throw up a few things right now.

Oh, I got my Obama/Biden sticker on my car today! Pointless in Kentucky I know, but it's there. Just to annoy the wingnuts.

The linked article at Salon is from an Alaskan writer's dismal view of Sarah "well golly gee" Palin. From the barbaric killing of wolves and bears from planes, the killing of wolf cubs in their dens, the open access to oil companies, and all those little Sarah tricks. Writer Nick Jans gives you the Alaskan's view of Palin that you rarely see.

Sarah Palin: The view from Alaska

Amid “Troopergate” and other government scandals, including killing wolf pups, an Alaskan writer explains why the Palin phenomenon rings hollow in his home state.

Photo
"..Like many Alaskans, I resent Palin’s claims that she speaks for all of us, and cringe when she tosses off her stump speech line, “Well, up in Alaska, we….” Not only did I not vote for her, she represents the antithesis of the Alaska I love. As mayor, she helped shape Wasilla into the chaotic, poorly planned strip mall that it is; as governor, she’s promoted that same headlong drive toward development and despoilment on a grand scale, while paying lip service to her love of the place.

As for that frontierswoman shtick, take another look at that hairpiece-augmented beehive and those stiletto heels. Coming from a college-educated family, living in a half-million-dollar view home, basking in a net worth of $1.25 million, and having owned 40-some registered motorized vehicles in the past two decades (including 17 snowmobiles and a plane) hardly qualifies Palin and her clan as the quintessential Joe Six-Pack family unit — though the adulation from that quarter shows the Palins must be fulfilling some sort of role-model fantasy.

Palin can claim to know Alaska; the fact is, she’s seen only a minuscule fraction of it — and that doesn’t include Little Diomede Island, the one place in Alaska where you actually can see Russia. So she can ride an ATV and shoot guns. Set her down in the bush on her own and I bet we’d discover she’s about as adept at butchering a moose and building a fire at 40 below zero as she is at discussing Supreme Court decisions. And that mountain-woman act is only the tip of a hollow iceberg.."

Logged On And Hurtin' | Postherpetic Neuralgia

Before I scatter a few posts on the old OOTM's I want to throw up a bit of a painful tirade about what my shingles has apparently evolved into. My doctor told me in the beginning that after shingles return to dormancy in the nerve cells that a lot of people experience a painful and dehabilitating aftermath which I have now apparently acquired. It's called "Post-herpetic neuralgia(s?)".

There's severe numbness in my right hand and up my arm all the time especially in the hand, the finger tips feel like they're being squeezed in a vice most of the time, painful itching, stiffness and painful cramping in the knuckles of the hand, burning sensations on the arm almost like a sunburn, the skin on the arm and the hand are super-sensitive to touch-something as simple as a piece of cardboard scraped across the skin brings sharp pain and burning. To top it off there's still pain and aches inside the arm and shoulder.

I've nearly become the one-armed man. At work and at home I've been reduced to using my left hand(I'm right-handed). The agony of the shingles is gone, but alms to the FSM when this pain and grief has finally left me!

I have an appointment on the 28th for a "nerve test" and then a meeting on the 29th with a neurologist to discuss the findings.

I've read(and been told) that some people never get rid of this, that it lingers to the end of their days(NIGHTMARE!)

A big reason the posting has been slow..
Moving on...

Hola! - Agoraphobia By Carruth

Having a nice weekend? Hope so....I'm logged on, and feeling the throbbing pulse of the Nets...Did that come out right? Here's something while I look around:

Agoraphobia is when a stranger enters the house and you go to the attic and lie down with your face pressed into the darkest corner, under the slanting slats of the roof. It’s the scream lurking in your gorge, so ready to burst that the least noise above a cat’s purr makes you tremble: when the marching band from the high school practices in the street outside you sit in the back of the closet, when the March wind lashes the treetops at night you crawl behind the sofa. Agoraphobia is when every night at 2:00 a.m. for five years—that’s 1,825 nights—you go out loaded with Thorazine to walk in the street beneath the dark, blank windows of the houses on either side, and you never get more than a hundred yards from your door. ... Agoraphobia is when you breathe and eat the dust of oblivion.

UH OH! Someone's Looking Closely At John McCain!

Rolling Stone's
Make-Believe Maverick.

A closer look at the life and career of John McCain reveals a disturbing record of recklessness and dishonesty

On the grounds between the two brick colleges, the chitchat between the scion of four-star admirals and the son of a prizefighter turns to their academic travels; both colleges sponsor a trip abroad for young officers to network with military and political leaders in a distant corner of the globe.

"I'm going to the Middle East," Dramesi says. "Turkey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Iran."

"Why are you going to the Middle East?" McCain asks, dismissively.

"It's a place we're probably going to have some problems," Dramesi says.

"Why? Where are you going to, John?"

"Oh, I'm going to Rio."

"What the hell are you going to Rio for?"

McCain, a married father of three, shrugs.

"I got a better chance of getting laid."

Oh and there's Mad Dog.

He's trailing in lots of key state. Unless we have a HUGE October "surprise" it's starting to look pretty good. Even if "Bible Spice" does REALLY well in the debate tonight and Joe makes a couple of his patented gaffes I don't think that will affect the standings right now in a big way.
I also-being a pessimist-have to look at the worst case scenario so I don't get hopes to high. I don't think I'll watch much of it. I tend to get to angry(surprise, not!). I'll follow some of it on the web.
Anyway fingers crossed. Go Joe!
