Evelyn Pringle | And We Knew They Would..

I didn't really have a lot of faith in my tough talkin' Democrats either. For good reason.

Congress Gives Iraq War Profiteers Another Hundred Billion
And we knew they would...

"..As citizens, we have no control over our own government. Never in my 57 years on this earth have I been so ashamed to be an American knowing that every day that the war continues we are knowingly allowing our soldiers and innocent Iraqis to be killed or injured with absolutely no justification, other than because politicians believe it will be beneficial to their careers to allow Bush’s failed war policies to continue.

While political commentators discuss voter odds, myself and probably most Americans are sitting at home unable to watch the news without breaking down crying as the latest pictures flash on the screen showing the happy faces of the young soldiers who are now dead, knowing full well that the next night there will be more pictures of dead soldiers because the politicians have made it clear that the citizens paying their salaries have no right to demand that their elected officials put an end to the killing in Iraq.."

The Corporate Media and Army Discontent

Here is a Great essay by Donald Hudson a private in the US Army.
On a somewhat related note I saw General Pace being interviewed on the NBC/GE's (corporate) Today Show this morning. He had his sad Memorial Day face on, and was being tossed softballs(of course) by the Today Show mouthpiece, I heard at least one, "they're fighting for our freedom there(in Iraq)", I heard him throw out the Bushco "9-11/Iraq link"(there is none), and some mention of "torture rooms" we've found in Iraq. With NO mention of dubya's torture rooms around the world. An unbelievably solid stream of corporate/government spin and B.S. with NO contradicting voices(discouraging words) allowed to speak. The "Liberal Media" has become eerily similar to Faux News.
Thankfully they soon went to one of those feel good stories to keep everyone from getting sad about dubya's quagmire, and then to a commercial so everyone can buy something and NOT have to worry their "beautiful minds" about body bags and yucky stuff.

A soldier in Iraq asks in despair: Why are we here?

After watching his roommate fatally wounded in a roadside bombing, an Army private wonders why the lives of good men are being lost when the Iraqis pose no threat to us and don't want us there.

"..Why are we here when this country still to date does not want us here? Why does our president’s personal agenda consume him so much, that he can not pay attention to what is really going on here?.."

"....I would just like to know what is the true reason we are here? This country poses no threat to our own. So why must we waste the lives of good men on a country that does not give a damn about itself? Most of my friends here share my views, but do not have the courage to say anything."

Holes in Mars?

I'm just a sad excuse for a blogger. Had a little fun this weekend, but mostly chores to catch up on, went to the office twice(sue me I need the money) which is where I'm at as I write. To top it off Saturday evening I discovered that our water heater had sprung a leak and has to be replaced(on a Saturday of Memorial Day weekend). That's $650+ that'll have to go on the old credit card. The fun part(other than actual fun things I could do with that money), it'll be Tuesday at the earliest to get a new one in. I took a cold shower last night, Jeebus! I WON'T be doing that again. So I've had barely time to sit down much less post. I'll post when I can if it is infrequent,

Anyway I found this is interesting. Mars has holes, maybe it's the Red & Hollow Planet. Some great stories could be waiting in those holes(Ray Bradbury where are you!)

Harry Reid Democratic Betrayer

Taylor Marsh and pretty much EVERYBODY in the Democratic party are BLASTING the weak-kneed ass kiss that Harry Reid gave George W. Bush last week. And 70% of the country shoul be ragging his sorry behind:

"Never before has one man so thoroughly betrayed the voters who put him and the Democratic Party in power. We didn't work our butts off and raise all that money so that the likes of Majority Leader Reid could collapse like a untrained fighter in the ring. Mr. Reid even voted for the supplemental. Speaker Pelosi did not. If there are any doubts who orchestrated this travesty with Mr. Bush and the Republicans please release them and embrace knowledge. A campaign truly worthy of Reid's feckless "leadership" has begun."

At least Nancy Pelosi had the good sense and courage to vote against Harry's kiss to Bush.

MoveOn.org is asking its members to send Reid bags of “weak tea,” along with a letter expressing their disappointment. A MoveOn e-mail sent to members called the passage of the funding bill “the most shameful moment on Iraq since the vote to authorize war in 2002.”

USA Poll Beshear Holds Huge Lead Over Fletcher in Kentucky Gov Race

From John Stamper at Pol Watchers.

SurveyUSA: Beshear holds large lead over Fletcher
Democratic nominee for governor Steve Beshear holds a substantial lead over Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher in the race for governor, according to a new survey released this morning by SurveyUSA and WHAS-TV in Louisville.

Here's a breakdown:
Beshear: 62 percent
Fletcher: 34 percent
Undecided: 4 percent

The poll shows Beshear leading in all regions of the state and among both women and men. Beshear also got support from 36 percent of Republicans, while Fletcher only garnered support from 12 percent of Democrats.
The automated phone survey of 609 likely voters, taken Wednesday and Thursday, has a margin of error of 3.9 points.

The Future of America Has Been Stolen
-Jeff Diehl

Investigative reporter Greg Palast says 4.5 million votes will be shoplifted in 2008, thanks largely to the “Rove-bots” that have been placed in the Justice Department following the U.S. Attorney firings. Being the guy who uncovered the voter “purge lists” of 2000 that disenfranchised black voters, he’s worth listening to, even if the mainstream press chooses not to.
This time around, he claims to have 500 emails that the House subpoenaed and Karl Rove claims were deleted forever. They prove definitively, says Palast, that the Justice Department is infested with operatives taking orders from Rove to steal upcoming elections for Republicans and permanently alter the Department.
The “clownocracy” of Bush and Rove is criminal and even evil in its attempts to steal past and future elections, according to Palast, and can only be stopped if “Democrats…find their souls and find their balls.”
In an updated new version of his best-selling book,
Armed Madhouse, Palast lays out the case for the future theft of the presidency, along with lots of other Executive malfeasance.

Manuel Valenzuela | Unmasking the Authoritarians

Phoenix Rising

"..Conceived through the neoconservative Mein Kampf, “Rebuilding America’s Defenses,” birthed through the controlled demolition of skyscrapers that gave rise to the New Pearl Harbor and nurtured through the psychological war of fear and terror upon the American populace, conveniently labeled the War on Terror, authoritarianism, and an absolute belief in it, has planted itself firmly upon American shores. The emergence of this pathogen, – for that is what it is – usually contained and restrained within the minds of millions of individuals, has dramatically shifted the personality and beliefs of American society, perhaps forever altering the makeup and psyche of the nation.

Thanks in large measure to an overwhelming propaganda campaign by the neocon controlled corporatist media, an onslaught of manipulation upon the American populace has resulted in the acceptance of authoritarian tendencies in a large segment of the citizenry. In present day American media, neocon anchors, reporters, talking heads and stenographers are allowed to parade uninterrupted and unobstructed, day after day, parroting neocon talking points and propaganda, stirring fear and insecurity and hatred and anger, hiding truth and disseminating fictions, all systemically done to condition the people into accepting Machiavellian-style governance..

Democrats Surrender With A Whimper

Democrats fold their cards and release funding for Bush's Iraq war. Giving him blank check.
Democrats = Bluff, call, call, call, FOLD.. Again.

--
From Kos

In the past month, we’ve seen a majority of House Democrats and a smaller majority of Senate Democrats favor three pieces of legislation that - while far from as strong as they should have been – would have put the onus on Mister Bush for continuing the occupation. Good for them. If only there were more like them.

If the latest legislation is as it appears to be, a toothless, gutless, spineless bill that gives Mister Bush his blank check, Democrats who vote for it are essentially buying the occupation.

Voting "nay" on such a conference bill is the best course of action for those 29 Senators and 169 Representatives who voted for cloture on Feingold-Reid and for the McGovern bill. I urge them to do so. They will not succeed in stopping it. But they will at least remind their fellow Democrats of how a majority party ought to behave when faced with an intransigent President whose unfettered policies and actions will mean the deaths and maiming of tens of thousands of Americans and Iraqis over the next 20 months.

The Day before Poll

From Mark Hebert at The Bridge:
-
There is a new WHAS 11/Survey USA poll out this morning with virtually no changes in the democratic or republican races for governor.

The poll was taken friday through sunday and included the names of the full tickets. 635 democrats who said they were likely to vote on tuesday and 465 republicans who identified themselves as likely voters, were polled.

Repubs:

44% Fletcher
34% Northup
17% Harper
5% Und.

Dems:

32% Beshear
23% Lunsford
17% Henry
12% Richards
7% Galbraith
1% Hensley
6% Und.

On the republican side, Fletcher continues to kill Northup in every section of Kentucky except Louisville and surrounding counties. In the democratic race, Henry dropped one point (well within the margin of error) but lost traction in the Louisville area.

Only 25% Say US is on the "Right track"

Most blame the war in Iraq and president Bush.

--
Pessimistic US

WASHINGTON — It's gloomy out there. Men and women, whites and minorities _ all are feeling a war-weary pessimism about the country seldom shared by so many people.

Only 25 percent of those surveyed say things in the U.S. are going in the right direction, according to an AP-Ipsos poll this month. That is about the lowest level of satisfaction detected since the survey started in December 2003.

Rarely have longer-running polls found such a rate since the even gloomier days of 1992 ahead of the first President Bush's re-election loss to Democrat Bill Clinton.

The current glumness is widely blamed on public discontent with the war in Iraq and with President Bush. It is striking for how widespread the mood is among different groups of people.

Women and minorities are less content than men and whites, which has been true for years. But all four groups are at or near record lows for the AP-Ipsos poll, and at unusually low levels for older surveys, as well.

Ann Bailey, 69, a retired school secretary in Broken Arrow, Okla., is a conservative who believes the country is on the wrong track. That sentiment should raise alarms for Republicans hoping to hold the White House and recapture Congress next year.

She cites a widespread lack of honesty plus immigration, gasoline prices and Iraq _ where a son and grandson are serving.

"As much as I hate it, I think they need to finish up what they're doing and get out of there," said Bailey. "I think we should step out and say, 'OK, now you solve your problem. We've done the best we can do.'"

Larry Ward, a moderate Republican from Pocomoke, Md., also senses the U.S. is heading the wrong way.

"We're still fighting a war we can't win," said Ward, 47, who operates a tree service. "That's a real big thing for me."

Three in 10 men and two in 10 women said this month they think the country is on the right track, down from nearly half of each who felt that way at the end of 2003.

Gore Has a New Book Out | Monkeys Soon to Start Throwing Feces

It's time for the Rightwing and their accompanying media to start attacking and smearing Al Gore again. He's got a new book out,
"The Assault on Reason".

--

The Assault on Reason

"..It is simply no longer possible to ignore the strangeness of our public discourse. I know I am not alone in feeling that something has gone fundamentally wrong. In 2001, I had hoped it was an aberration when polls showed that three-quarters of Americans believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for attacking us on Sept. 11. More than five years later, however, nearly half of the American public still believes Saddam was connected to the attack.

At first I thought the exhaustive, nonstop coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial was just an unfortunate excess—an unwelcome departure from the normal good sense and judgment of our television news media. Now we know that it was merely an early example of a new pattern of serial obsessions that periodically take over the airwaves for weeks at a time: the Michael Jackson trial and the Robert Blake trial, the Laci Peterson tragedy and the Chandra Levy tragedy, Britney and KFed, Lindsay and Paris and Nicole.

While American television watchers were collectively devoting 100 million hours of their lives each week to these and other similar stories, our nation was in the process of more quietly making what future historians will certainly describe as a series of catastrophically mistaken decisions on issues of war and peace, the global climate and human survival, freedom and barbarity, justice and fairness. For example, hardly anyone now disagrees that the choice to invade Iraq was a grievous mistake. Yet, incredibly, all of the evidence and arguments necessary to have made the right decision were available at the time and in hindsight are glaringly obvious.

Those of us who have served in the U.S. Senate and watched it change over time could volunteer a response to Senator Byrd's incisive description of the Senate prior to the invasion: The chamber was empty because the Senators were somewhere else. Many of them were at fund-raising events they now feel compelled to attend almost constantly in order to collect money—much of it from special interests—to buy 30-second TV commercials for their next re-election campaign. The Senate was silent because Senators don't feel that what they say on the floor of the Senate really matters that much anymore—not to the other Senators, who are almost never present when their colleagues speak, and certainly not to the voters, because the news media seldom report on Senate speeches anymore.

Ky Governor's Race | Lundsford and Northup Slipping

From Down With Tyranny. Why has psuedo-Democrat Bruce Lunsford who at one time looked like he might actually buy his way into the KY governor's mansion suddenly come on hard times? On the Republican side I've already said that anyone with a Fletcher sign in their yard may as well have one that says, "We Vote For Crooks!". Republican Anne Northup is a Bushco puppet and Fletcher being criminally incompetent is a good thing as Republican governors go. There is a number of Democrats still in the field. My favorite was Jonathan Miller till he dropped out and threw his support to Beshear. A BIG reason Beshear's lead suddenly jumped. Anyway here's DWT:

--
THINGS ARE LOOKING UP IN... KENTUCKY!

If you've been following the story here at DWT for the last few months, you know that moderate Steve Beshear is battling reactionary fake-Dem Bruce Lunsford. Yesterday there were some important developments to report, each of which bodes well for folks in the Bluegrass state.

If you ever wondered how any Republican couldn't beat a convicted felon-- and the most disliked and distrusted governor anywhere in America-- you don't know much about bumbling imbecile Anne Northup. Many of us came in contact with this rubber stamp nonentity last year when progressive Democrat Steve Yarmuth dispatched her from the U.S. Congress where she had compiled an unblemished record of having done nothing whatsoever other than agreeing with Bush and Cheney on every single hideous agenda item they ever puked up. Kentucky Republicans decided she was the best they could do against walking, breathing disgrace, crooked Ernie Fletcher (who will do all he can to stay in the governor's mansion since he will be headed for prison as soon as his term expires).

With the latest polling (more on that below) showing that Republicans have already decided that for all his obvious flaws Fletcher is still better than Northup, the Northup campaign gave the state a great big demonstration of why she would make an absolutely horrendous governor. Basically, her campaign went wild and made late-night serial robo-calls to Republicans all over Kentucky-- and kept doing it all night... to the same people. She spent an awful lot of money to guarantee an awful lot of people would never vote for her under any circumstances. "Every way we can, we're telling people how sorry we are," Northup said yesterday while campaigning in Corbin. "We just feel terrible about it." Not nearly as bad as she's likely to feel when the polls close on Tuesday evening.

Now about the new poll numbers. Not only do they show Fletcher convincingly ahead of Northup (as of Tuesday, with a 10% lead)-- proving the Republicans positively embrace the criminality of their elected officials-- but that there is more good news for Democrats. On Tuesday, Democrats who were asked who they are likely to vote for next week, have started abandoning Lunsford. Steve Beshear now leads him 32%-23%, with 44% spread out among other candidates and undecideds. Keep in mind that even with Beshear slightly ahead, this is going to be a very low turnout election (15% is expected), and it's impossible to predict how things will play out on the ground. Lunsford has invested a ton of money in a field operation, and he has the not-so-tacit support of the state party. If neither ticket gets over 40% next Tuesday, there will be a run off on June 26.

Why has the bottom finally started falling out of Lunsford's cash-rich campaign? No one tells this story better than Cliff Schechter, who admits that he once worked for Lunsford and well-knows what a corrupt and unethical scoundrel he is-- and how utterly unfit for public office or to hold the banner of the Democratic Party. Keep in mind that Lunsford was the co-chair, with mental patient Zell Miller, of Democrats For Bush.

Supporting the Troops | Republican Style

Bush says he will veto a 3.5%(only 3.5%) pay increase for our troops dying every week in his war in Iraq. He'll also veto a survivor's benefit for families of slain soldiers. Here's more from Kos:

--
"Supporting" the Troops

The Democratic House has included two provisions in its version of the defense authorization bill for 2008 that would give troops a 3.5 percent pay raise as well as increasing the level of benefits for survivors of slain soldiers and civilians employees. The Bush administration's reaction?

Bush budget officials said the administration "strongly opposes" both the 3.5 percent raise for 2008 and the follow-on increases, calling extra pay increases "unnecessary."

And from Jon Soltz of VoteVets.org:
--

Bush Opposes More Money for Troops and Survivors - Explain That!

The president just vetoed legislation so he would be able to send more troops into the middle of the Iraqi religious civil war - without end, mind you - but is against increasing benefits to the spouses of those lost, or a pay increase to those who are serving? If there's a more fitting definition of 'outrage,' I'd love to see it.

I doubt I even need to go into this further to get the point across about how shameless this is, but for the hell of it, I will.

Forty dollars a month might seem like chump change to millionaires like the president and vice president, but for a mom of a young kid who just lost her husband in Iraq, that $480 a year means some school clothes and supplies, a few trips to the grocery store, and some health insurance copays. Believe me, even with the current benefits that get paid out by the Department of Defense and insurance that many troops buy into, those who lose spouses in Iraq aren't sleeping in mounds of cash. The increase proposed by Democrats will mean a hell of a lot. At
VoteVets.org, we've heard absolute horror stories on the type of cutbacks that widows and widowers have had to make because the government doesn't provide enough to those who lose a loved one in war.

From Antiwar.com

Wednesday: 70 Iraqis Killed, 184 Wounded
Violence today was marked by heavy clashing in the Nasariya area and a chorine truck bomb in Abu Saida. At least 70 Iraqis were killed and 184 were injured in those and other attacks throughout the country. No foreign deaths were reported, but two were injured during shelling in the Green Zone. Also, new data shows that the increase in American troops has had little positive effect on violence.
Newly released U.S. data revealed that the increase in troops has had little to no effect on violence in Iraq. If anything, the surge has changed the tactics used. Instead of small armed attacks, large-scale bombings are now preferred.
A truck bomb carrying chlorine gas killed 45 people and wounded 60 last night in Abu Saida. Police denied the use of chlorine, but many of the victims reported breathing difficulties.

Support Our Troops. End The War

Ten ideas for supporting our troops and ending the Iraq war(dubya's war) this Memorial Day Weekend.
Here's a message from John Edwards:

Of course the GOP boys at The American Legion will have none of that war protestin' on THEIR holiday. Of course they were against the war in Kosovo, etc. Here's some digby with the lowdown:

This attack on Edwards is all GOP PR nonsense, of course. The American Legion's partisan history is obvious to any sentient being: they are just another Republican organization that is on the wrong side of the most important issue of our time. They are certainly not speaking for a majority anymore, if they ever did.
Memorial day is a sacred day. And I can't think of a better time to honor the deaths of all the soldiers who've died in various wars than by exercising your right of free speech and conscience. Here are ten ways you can support the troops and end the war, courtesy of the Edwards campaign.
Oh, and by the way, anyone want to make a bet that the Legion won't be so impressed with the voting process as a means to end the war come 2008? I didn't think so.

Julie Amero Sentencing Friday

Speaking of horrific miscarriages of justice. The sentencing of Julie Amero has again been delayed till Friday. Amero is the teacher in Connecticut who was arrested when an adware-infected computer started showing porn pop-up images in a classroom in which she was substituting. She faces up to 40 years in prison. NYT story here and here's an excerpted comment from Andy Carvin at Learning Now.

--
Does Sentencing Delay Mean a Possible Reprieve for Julie Amero?

Julie Amero, the Connecticut substitute teacher facing a controversial 40-year prison sentence for exposing her students to online pornography, has once again had her sentencing delayed. Might the delay be a sign that prosecutors are reconsidering the evidence that led to her conviction?
As I’ve reported on several occasions since the beginning of this year, educator Julie Amero has been living a nightmare ever since being charged, and later convicted, of allowing students to see adult-oriented images on a computer in her classroom. Amero’s conviction shocked many educators, bloggers and Internet experts, many of whom believed that she was a victim of circumstances - namely, malicious malware that popped up on a computer screen, which was allowed to get through because the school’s Internet filters weren’t working properly that day.

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize America - I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."
--Jerry Falwell on The 700 Club, Sept. 13, 2001

'Nuff said. I wish him no ill but I certainly won't miss him. Some old people might have a bit more money by not having another televangelist to send their money to. That's all.

MSNBC Says .gov or .org | Who Cares?

This is hilarious. I had to take a break from work to throw it up here. Concerning Jerry Falwell's trip into sainthood by our MSM, Contessa Brewer of MSNBC just quoted whitehouse.org(a satire site) instead of whitehouse.gov(Bushco whitehouse).
--
Contessa Brewer (speaking to Chris Matthews):

You're looking at a guy - Jerry Falwell - who had a lot of influence on the current President, even now. One of my producers, Chris, just pulled up a page from whitehouse.org where they say "Jerry Falwell has earned his role as the de facto executive director of domestic and global policy for the White House." How much influence did he have on George W. Bush?

Yahoo's Greenest City Competition

Today, Yahoo is launching a new green competition that will reward America's greenest city with a fleet of hybrid taxis. The launch is taking place today in Time Square by Yahoo cofounder David Filo, alongside actor Matt Dillon and Global Green USA CEO Matt Petersen.

Dubbed Be a Better Planet, the campaign is seeking to empower Americans make key changes to their lives and lifestyles that will fight global warming. To participate, individuals need to visit the
Be a Better Planet website and take the actions listed below. The more green actions you sign up for, the more points go to your city and the closer it comes being America's greenest:

1. Answer a question on Yahoo! Answers (and take your shot at answering Matt Dillon’s question while you’re at it about the most effective yet simple ways people can save energy.
2. Go to Yahoo! oneSearch on your mobile phone to type in green keywords like “organic food” and “public transport” plus your zip code to find relevant local resources.
3.Pledge to take up to about 30 different planet-protecting actions in order to reduce your personal carbon emissions and track them on an interactive U.S. map to see the collective impact of everyone else who takes part.

Participants will also receive a free energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), while supplies last. For it's part, Yahoo has kicked off the contest by donating a fleet of hybrids to the city of New York and has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2007.

Cat's Eye Nebula by Hubble

Nice shot.

A classic planetary nebula, the Cat's Eye (NGC 6543) represents a final, brief yet glorious phase in the life of a sun-like star. This nebula's dying central star may have produced the simple, outer pattern of dusty concentric shells by shrugging off outer layers in a series of regular convulsions. But the formation of the beautiful, more complex inner structures is not well understood. Seen so clearly in this sharp Hubble Space Telescope image, the truly cosmic eye is over half a light-year across. Gazing into the Cat's Eye, astronomers may well be seeing the fate of our sun, destined to enter its own planetary nebula phase of evolution ... in about 5 billion years.

More Details on the "Fort Dix Six"

More details emerging about those "jihadists" bent on "attacking" Fort Dix.
This is from Mother Jones.

Curious Details Emerge on the Fort Dix Six

MSNBC has an update on the six foreign nationals who were arrested for plotting to attack Fort Dix Army base and it looks like they might have been a bunch of bumblers egged on by over-aggressive FBI informants -- leading to speculation that an entrapment defense is upcoming. (Spotted on TPM.)
As for the bumbling plotters: "The FBI learned of the alleged plot when the men went to a Circuit City store and asked a clerk to transfer a jihad training video of themselves onto a DVD."
As for the over-aggressive informants: "One of the [accused plotters]... called a Philadelphia police officer in November, saying that he had been approached by someone who was pressuring him to obtain a map of Fort Dix, and that he feared the incident was terrorist-related, according to court documents."
Also, here's the description of one of the informants actions: "He railed against the United States, helped scout out military installations for attack, offered to introduce his comrades to an arms dealer and gave them a list of weapons he could procure, including machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades."

Bill Moyer's Journal Interview

Bill Moyer interviewed Marilyn B. Young, historian, foreign policy guru and author of numerous books and articls, including "Iraq and the Lessons of Vietnam" on his Journal program last night. Watch video here, and read the transcript. The interview concerned the neo-cons and especially Condoleeza Rice. Condoleeza's ability to lie knowing that everyone she knows is watching knows she's lieing is quite breathtaking. And there's also Condi's apparent life in another universe where dubya's Iraqi adventure is going wonderfully, the Iraqis invited us to their party, the UN asked us to go and those Iraqi's just hope we'll stay and play for eva :

--

Marilyn B. Young:

There are a number of places where the deception is really quite extraordinary. But it's deception always with a half truth, which is the best kind of lie, the most persuasive lie. So she says, "It wasn't just our intelligence service that talked about weapons of mass destruction." That's true. The Germans looked into it and said, you know what? Your information is wrong, it's useless. So there were other intelligence services involved, but they disagreed with ours, which she didn't say.

Then she said the U.N. thought there were WMD's. But that's for people with really bad short term memory loss. Because Hans Blix, who was in the U.N. as inspector, was quite persuaded that in fact, there were no weapons of mass destruction. The most extraordinary one, though, the really one that just takes my breath away, is where she says we're in Iraq because the Iraqi government invited us there. And we're there under a U.N. mandate. Saddam Hussein certainly didn't invite us in. And the UN mandate that she refers to, it's a resolution, it's not a mandate-- it says, after all, we're all agreed that everyone should help in the reconstruction of Iraq. That's all. It's not a mandate for occupation, at all.

Iraqi Parliament Votes U.S. Out | U.S. "News" Media Yawns

That Larry King he's so funny. Wonder what Brittany Spears is up to? How's Anna Nicole's baby and boyfriends?. Someone check our cable "News" to get all that cutting info. For those of us not getting all our news from those cable "news" corporations, this item was worthy of note-from Alternet:

Majority of Iraqi Lawmakers Now Reject Occupation

More than half of the members of Iraq's parliament rejected for the first time on Tuesday the continuing occupation of their country. The U.S. media ignored the story.

On Tuesday, without note in the U.S. media, more than half of the members of Iraq's parliament rejected the continuing occupation of their country. 144 lawmakers signed onto a legislative petition calling on the United States to set a timetable for withdrawal, according to Nassar Al-Rubaie, a spokesman for the Al Sadr movement, the nationalist Shia group that sponsored the petition.

It's a hugely significant development. Lawmakers demanding an end to the occupation now have the upper hand in the Iraqi legislature for the first time; previous attempts at a similar resolution fell just short of the 138 votes needed to pass (there are 275 members of the Iraqi parliament, but many have fled the country's civil conflict, and at times it's been difficult to arrive at a quorum).

Reached by phone in Baghdad on Tuesday, Al-Rubaie said that he would present the petition, which is nonbinding, to the speaker of the Iraqi parliament and demand that a binding measure be put to a vote. Under Iraqi law, the speaker must present a resolution that's called for by a majority of lawmakers, but there are significant loopholes and what will happen next is unclear.

What is clear is that while the U.S. Congress dickers over timelines and benchmarks, Baghdad faces a major political showdown of its own. The major schism in Iraqi politics is not between Sunni and Shia or supporters of the Iraqi government and "anti-government forces," nor is it a clash of "moderates" against "radicals"; the defining battle for Iraq at the political level today is between nationalists trying to hold the Iraqi state together and separatists backed, so far, by the United States and Britain.

The Truth Of Reagan's Economic Record

The Republicans have been busy lately. All of their candidates want to claim the mantle of Reagan. However, the truth of Reagan's record is far more sobering. Reagan never balanced a budget and he sent the country into mammoth amounts of debt. Finally, his tax cuts never even came close to paying for themselves.

First -- and most importantly -- Reagan never balanced a budget. In fact, Reagan never came close to balancing a budget. For all of his talk about hating big government, Reagan did a fair amount of solid work in creating a bigger federal government.

Yes, it's a ludicrous headline. But is it any more ludicrous than the media's current hysteria over six terrorist wannabes in Jersey who only had access to purchase the weapons they wanted because an FBI sting operative said he'd sell them to them?
While the media dutifully does its job of attempting to whip the public into a frenzy about the latest misfits in search of self-styled jihadist glory and the loathsome Chris Christie tries to play on public fears to launch whatever seat in Washington for which he's planning to run next year,

The US has Returned Fundamentalism to Afghanistan
Malalai Joya

Photo: Dru Oja Jay

"..The US government removed the ultra-reactionary and brutal regime of Taliban, but instead of relying on Afghan people, pushed us from the frying pan into the fire and selected its friends from among the most dirty and infamous criminals of the “Northern Alliance”, which is made up of the sworn enemies of democracy and human rights, and are as dark-minded, evil, and cruel as the Taliban.

The Western media talks about democracy and the liberation of Afghanistan, but the US and its allies are engaged in the warlordization, criminalization and drug-lordization of our wounded land.

Today the Northern alliance leaders are the key power holders and our people are hostage in the hands of these ruthless gangs of killers. Many of them are responsible for butchering tens of thousands of innocent people in the past 2 decades but are in power and hold key positions in the government.

Let me list few of the key power-holders of Afghanistan:
Karim Khalili, the vice-president, is leader of a pro-Iran party called Wahdat, responsible for killing thousands of innocent people, and named by Human Rights Watch as a war criminal.
Ismael Khan, another killer warlord and lackey of the Iranian regime is the minister of water and power.
Izzatullah Wasifi, Afghanistan’s anti-corruption chief has been a convicted drug trafficker who has spent around 4 years in a Nevada state prison in the US.
General Mohammed Daoud, Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister in charge of the anti-drug effort, is a former warlord and famous drug-trafficker.
Rashid Dostum, the chief of staff of the Afghan army, is a heartless killer and warlord, named by Human Rights Watch as a war criminal.
Qasim Fahim, former defense minister and now a Senator and adviser to Mr. Karzai is the most powerful warlord of the Northern Alliance, and accused of war crimes.

And this list has hundreds of men on it, including Sayyaf, Ulomi, Golabzoi, Rabbani, Qanooni, Mohaqiq, Mullah Rocketi, etc. They should all be removed from power and put on trial for war crimes. In fact all the major institutions in Afghanistan are occupied by warlords and drug-lords. How can we talk about democracy when our legislative, judicial and executive bodies are infected with the viruses of fundamentalism and drug mafia?.."

The Worst President in History?

From Rolling Stone:

One of America's leading historians assesses George W. Bush

George W. Bush's presidency appears headed for colossal historical disgrace. Barring a cataclysmic event on the order of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, after which the public might rally around the White House once again, there seems to be little the administration can do to avoid being ranked on the lowest tier of U.S. presidents. And that may be the best-case scenario. Many historians are now wondering whether Bush, in fact, will be remembered as the very worst president in all of American history.

More Death and Horror in Dubya's Iraq

Eight more Americans killed today in dubya's Iraqi meatgrinder: That's 3,373(so far) American service people dead for George W. Bush's corporate war.
The deadliest attack against U.S. forces occurred in Diyala, where six U.S. soldiers and a European journalist were killed when a massive bomb destroyed their vehicle..

Just another day:
A car bomb ripped through a wholesale food market in western Baghdad on Sunday, flattening cars and shops and killing at least 30 people in the deadliest of a wave of attacks across Iraq that killed at least 50 people..
Just like an Indiana marketplace right?

Iraqi Poll | Yankee Go Home

In a poll conducted by D3 Systems for the BBC, ABC News, ARD German TV and USA Today, more than 2,000 people were questioned in more than 450 neighbourhoods and villages across all 18 provinces of Iraq between 25 February and 5 March 2007:

69% of Iraqis think that the occupation by the US and the UK is making things worse.

77% of Iraqis think that the US occupation is having a negative effect compared to 12% who think the occupation is having a positive effect. (That’s about 7 to 1 PURPLE THUMBS DOWN by my calculations.)

A majority (51%) actually approves of attacks on coalition forces.

Anne Northup's Campaign Slogan | "Eviil Liberals!

In yesterday's dead tree issue of The Lexington-Herald Leader Republican Candidate for Kentucky governor Anne Northup had this to say about poor governor Ernie Fletcher:

"If Democrats take back the governor's office, taxes will be up and liberals will be in control. Kentucky needs a fresh start. Anne Northup can win in November."
Bush enabler Northup got her booty kicked last election by progressive John Yarmuth. I've got some bad news for Poor Anne. The word "Liberal" is not the fear word she thinks it is, Liberals brought us many of the benefits we enjoy today(hint Social Security, Medicare, etc, etc.), and all Democrats are not Liberals(hint, Liebermann, Lundsford, etc.). Just like all Republicans are not idiots, it's true they're not. Read up Anne, do a little research, come towards the light.

Surprise! Mitch McConnell Shilling for the Super Rich, Again

Wow, who woulda thunk it. Bush's main man in Kentucky Sen. Mitch "Mo Money" McConnell(R, corrupt) is all for giving more huge tax breaks to the wealthiest of the wealthy here in Kentucky:

Horse owner tax break bill back
Measure offered by McConnell
--Janet Patton, Herald-Leader.com

WASHINGTON --Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has re-introduced a multimillion-dollar tax break for racehorse owners that could cost taxpayers more than a quarter of a billion dollars over five years.
The "Equine Equity Act" would reduce from two years to one year the time an owner would have to hold a racehorse before it would be eligible for the capital gains tax rate at sale. The bill would also allow all racehorses to be depreciated over three years; some now are depreciated over seven.
Similar legislation introduced in 2005 would have cut horse owners' taxes by an estimated $18 million over one year and up to $267 million over five years, according to McConnell's office. Congressional officials have not yet produced an estimate for 2007.

I wonder why Mitch keeps whoring for the already wealthy? There has to be some reason that he..er..Ooh...I see, nevermind:
The National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Horse PAC is lobbying for the break. In 2006, after McConnell first introduced the legislation, Horse PAC gave McConnell and his political action committees a combined $22,500, more than it gave any other lawmaker. Co-sponsors of Monday's bill, Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., and Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., also received $5,000 each for their federal leadership PACs last year, according to Horse PAC's 2006 annual report.

Maybe there's a solution to Mitch.

Aaah, For A Long, Lazy, "Impeachment Summer"

Speaking of loyalty to my country "Impeachment Summer" is coming up.

From DowningStreet.org

Full text of the Petition
I support the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney for the following reasons:
1. Violating the United Nations Charter by launching an illegal "War of Aggression" against Iraq without cause, using fraud to sell the war to Congress and the public, and misusing government funds to begin bombing without Congressional authorization.
2. Violating U.S. and international law by authorizing the torture of thousands of captives, resulting in dozens of deaths, and keeping prisoners hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
3. Violating the Constitution by arbitrarily detaining Americans, legal residents, and non-Americans, without due process, without charge, and without access to counsel.
4. Violating the Geneva Conventions by targeting civilians, journalists, hospitals, and ambulances, and using illegal weapons, including white phosphorous, depleted uranium, and a new type of napalm.
5. Violating U.S. law and the Constitution through widespread wiretapping of the phone calls and emails of Americans without a warrant.
6. Violating the Constitution by using "signing statements" to defy hundreds of laws passed by Congress.
7. Violating U.S. and state law by obstructing honest elections in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006.
8. Violating U.S. law by using paid propaganda and disinformation, selectively and misleadingly leaking classified information, and exposing the identity of a covert CIA operative working on sensitive WMD proliferation for political retribution.
9. Subverting the Constitution and abusing Presidential power by asserting a "Unitary Executive Theory" giving unlimited powers to the President, by obstructing efforts by Congress and the Courts to review and restrict Presidential actions, and by promoting and signing legislation negating the Bill of Rights and the Writ of Habeas Corpus.
10. Gross negligence in failing to assist New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina, in ignoring urgent warnings of an Al Qaeda attack prior to Sept. 11, 2001, and in increasing air pollution causing global warming.

Sign the petition online.
