Project Censored: The Top 25 Stories You Will Not Hear(Or See) On Your "News" Reports

Project Censored

"At Project Censored, we examine the coverage of news and information important to the maintenance of a healthy and functioning democracy. We define Modern Censorship as the subtle yet constant and sophisticated manipulation of reality in our mass media outlets. On a daily basis, censorship refers to the intentional non-inclusion of a news story – or piece of a news story – based on anything other than a desire to tell the truth. Such manipulation can take the form of political pressure (from government officials and powerful individuals), economic pressure (from advertisers and funders), and legal pressure (the threat of lawsuits from deep-pocket individuals, corporations, and institutions)."

Mine Sites; Support Reforestation Proposal

Speaking of stimulus funds and green jobs. This sounds like a great idea(along with putting an end to mountaintop removal mining);

-Photo

Support Reforestation Proposal
Greening the coalfields makes economic, environmental sense

"..This vision of reforesting a region and replenishing watersheds, while reviving local economies and creating sources of renewable energy, is not pie in the sky.

It's a near "shovel ready" plan developed by scientists at the University of Kentucky and Virginia Tech and by government reclamation experts who have mud on their boots from 30 years of inspecting strip mines.

All that stands between their vision and reality: $422 million.

This is a worthy mission that deserves support from Congress, the Obama administration, state governments and the coal industry.

The Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative is also a perfect fit for President Barack Obama's vision of retooling the economy by developing renewable energy to achieve energy independence and reverse global warming.

In the process, green jobs would be created in a region that desperately needs any kind of jobs.

ARRI (say aerie) is not just proposing to reforest 125,000 acres of parched grassland over five years by planting 125 million trees.

People would also be put to work preparing and maintaining sites for solar, wind and biomass farms; measuring carbon dioxide sequestered by the new forest; working with landowners, and developing trails and tourism..."

Note of the Day: My Representative Ben Chandler Sucks!

Yes sucks. And yes he's a Democrat, a right of center "blue dog"(hair above Republican) Democrat.

I've sent him 2 inquiries by email with serious questions and concerns I've had regarding jobs, health care, etc. I've yet to get an answer stating his positions and/or whether he gives a damn. Obvious answer; He doesn't give a damn. And yes, I know, I know, I'm not a highly paid "journalist" or lobbyist.
Say what you want about my Wingnut Senators Bunning and McConnell, and there's a lot or reasons to get them out of office, but at least when you voiced a position with them you got a form letter back stating their position. I didn't agree with their position but you knew SOMEONE there had acknowledged your existance.
Then what do I see today on the Lexington Herald-Leader web page:

Strapped cabinet hires Chandler's wife
JENNIFER CHANDLER GETS $79,656 JOB
FRANKFORT — Despite declining revenue and deep budget cuts, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet created a $79,656-a-year management job this summer for Jennifer Chandler, wife of U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler, D-Versailles..."

Does it annoy you just a bit? Just another inBred political backrub for hire? Where these people never disappear, they just pop up into a bureaocratic made-up job somewhere else.

My last unanswered question(s) for "useless" Ben were-
Regarding health care, whether he supports a public option, apparent answer...NO.
Next question- Regarding Kentucky's(and my) unemployment woes what could, and should be done with those vaunted millions in Federal stimulus money to give people work and income, apparent answer...don't know, don't care.
But hey, Mrs. Chandler has a golden government goose. Surprise...
Next elections for "gentle Ben";
I vote for the other guy if it's a Dem, I don't vote for either when it's a Repub.
Remember Kentuckians, Ben doesn't need ya! Unless you got a golden egg of course.
Note of the Day; Ben Chandler, sucks.

The New National Health Insurance Plan | Max Baucus Debacle Version

Regarding the new Max Baucus "clusternuts" Health care bill. Or as Wendell Potter correctly called it The "Insurance Industry Profit Protection Act". You know, the bill that HAD to be "bi-partisan", so the Democrats neutered it into a Insurance company give-away and kissed Republican butts throughout the whole process to find out(AHA!) that no Republican is interested in it anyway.
Well, Atrios has come up with an idea for this contraption that's so crazy it just might work.

Instead of a fine, perhaps the government could just sign you up to... oh, I don't know what we should call it... a public plan? And then send you a bill.

AW, Damn! | Jim Carroll Dies

I remember you Jim Carroll. You ROCKED, Especially this song, "People Who Died".

I always thought he deserved a place in the R&R Pantheon.
RIP Jim..

I am never bored. I entertain myself. I put deadly spiders along my thigh, and they inject me with God. At times, I pretend I am a man in order to laugh.

Past midnight, when the doors have been barricaded for night, I ascend and steal water from the baptismal fount to drink. For nourishment, I eat what moves along the floor in the darkness. I have never seen my food.

What need have I for companionship? Without trying, I have made an alliance with angels: my will and capability are one. And, against my will at first, I was given comrades in hell. It is why I dance.

The saints know who I am. Because I dance, they have made clear that they may offer me no aid. Yet, they have vowed their respect for me nonetheless.

At night, to keep my body well, I climb these church walls within. For footholds I see the reliefs of Christ on his way to Calvary, as he weeps into a veil. Sometimes, as a great feast day approaches, workmen use scaffolds to polish the facades. They ascend all the way to the rotunda ceiling. It is my only sky. I choke on the dead reliquary air of a hundred years. I will be here on this scaffold, like an owl, for a hundred more. Looking down, it is again the day of my birth. And I kiss the painted blue. I touch the painted stars.
-Jim Carroll

The Public Option | Not Quite Dead Yet?

Well, well, maybe that public option that my "news"paper and most corporate outlets keep telling me is a goner is still kicking. At least according to President Obama in a speech in Minnesota today. He sounds pretty sincere people:

Paul Krugman explains:
Why the public option matters

Belatedly...
I wish I had a job to go to tomorrow but I don't...Let me rephrase that, I wish I had a source of income that a job brings. This worry is like a planet on my shoulders every day.
On a related note I'd be glad to dump the ads at the top of this page for ones that would make me some survival money. I've had to look at those things for 2-3 months(?) and have yet to get a dime from it.
Anyone like to buy a banner? No?
It's cold out here in nobody land.

Rightwing Attacks On Obama A Continuation Of Their Style

I heard there was some kind of crazy wingnut gathering in Washington yesterday. Anyone else hear anything about that? Hmmmm? Something about they lost the last few election cycles and it's driving them nuts? Someone needs to check out their cable Networks FAUX and CNN and see what's up with that.
Glenn Greenwald takes on the corporate media's latest fascination(other than teabaggers) with that new-fangled Republican trend of; making up sh*t, ignoring their own hypocracy, and treating Democratic ideals with sneering contempt.

Is the Right's attack on Obama's legitimacy new or unprecedented?

"..Nothing that the GOP is doing to Obama should be the slightest bit surprising because this is the true face of the American Right -- and that's been true for a very long time now. It didn't just become true in the last few months or in the last two years. Recent months is just the time period when the media began noticing and acknowledging what they are: a pack of crazed, primitive radicals who don't really believe in the country's core founding values and don't merely disagree with, but contest the legitimacy of, any elected political officials who aren't part of their movement. Before the last year or so, the media pretended that this was a serious, adult, substantive political movement, but it wasn't any truer then than it is now. All one has to do is review their behavior during the Clinton presidency -- to say nothing of the Bush years -- to see that none of this is remotely new. Nothing they're doing to Obama is a break from their past behavior; it's just a natural and totally predictable continuation of it..."

When they're not in power it's what they do.
When they're in power they loot the treasury, turn the government over to corporations(I know Dems do to, but not to GOP level) and the churches, rape the environment(more than usual), coddle the rich and the corrupt, etc.

President Obama | Video: The National Health Care Speech

I watched the speech and was fairly impressed. At least he mentioned a "public option" which was more than I expected. If he'll stand by it and fight for it I'll be truly impressed, not to mention grateful. Here's the complete speech, which I thought was pretty good, not his best but pretty good:

As a bonus here's Robert Reich with a quick explanation of what the "public option" really is in a nutshell:

Afghanistan | Walking Into An Ambush

I knew we shouldn't be invading Iraq in 2003 and though I hated the Taliban I didn't really think we should have invaded Afghanistan(other than going in to pluck out Osama Bin Ladin). Years later it's turning into another pointless meatgrinder.
Here's McClatchy's excellent combat reporter Jonathan S. Landay who barely made it out of an ambush that took 4 American marines, 8 Aghan soldiers and an interpreter:

'We're pinned down:' 4 U.S. Marines die in Afghan ambush

"..Four U.S. Marines were killed Tuesday, the most U.S. service members assigned as trainers to the Afghan National Army to be lost in a single incident since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. Eight Afghan troops and police and the Marine commander's Afghan interpreter also died in the ambush and the subsequent battle that raged from dawn until 2 p.m. around this remote hamlet in eastern Kunar province, close to the Pakistan border..."

Happy Labor Day America! Continuing Education....Oh, And Some Pics!

Unfortunately there still hasn't been an offering of a "labor" position for me(yeah I know, and millions of others). I even uploaded and/or emailed 4 resumes for jobs today.
I got some papers from the Department of Labor a few days ago giving me some information on government grants, etc. for college. AND..I could probably still receive unemployment benefits while I went for a degree! It's just that with my age and this economy I don't even know if that will help much.
I have been thinking seriously about it though.
Going back to school. Maybe We'll see.
Went down to the country over Labor Day weekend. Here's a few of the pics from the trip to the "backcountry mountains". Check out the work on this old stone mill chimney:

Anyway I'm still around passerbyes and here's hoping you have a nice and safe remainder to your Labor Day.
