Common Sense In The Failed War On Marijuana Users?

It's not a war on drugs it's a war on users.

Daily Kos has a good page up discussing the insanity of the "War on Drugs" over the last few decades. Specifiaclly marijuana users and the Rightwing's need for a constant "war" on something.
--

Isn't it blindingly clear that people should not go to jail for smoking marijuana. With over a million people arrested each year for merely possessing Cannabis it's time to adopt a more sensible solution to this long nightmare better known as the failed war on drugs. We almost made it 31 years ago before the far right-wing cabal of conservative religious zealots hijacked the Republican Party our nation was moving towards drug law reform.

Interesting related story: Appeals court rules that confiscated marijuana must be returned to man in California.

That slanted Zogby Poll

Has anyone heard about that Zogby Poll? I don't watch any corporate news other than about half hour of local stuff a day so I don't get to hear our famous "Liberal Media" blast their latest GOP friendly talking points. Here's DWT:

--
Media Lavishes Attention On Bogus Internet Poll Showing Hillary Losing To Repubs -- And Ignores Reputable Poll Finding Opposite.

"..the Zogby poll was covered with few mentions either of its dubious methodology or of the degree to which its findings don't jibe with other surveys. Bottom line: The Zogby poll was considered big news because many in the political press are heavily invested in the Hillary-is-unelectable narrative for all kinds of reasons that have little to do with a desire to, you know, practice journalism.."
---

It's not as funny, nor as good an example of the "Liberal corporate media" as the Joe Klein(Joke Line) and Time FISA Democratic smear. For this I highly recommend Glenn Greenwald's "Time"line. A wonderful example of the GOP friendly "he said, she said" news today. Read it for the enjoyment, not the anger. I actually knew Time magazine was -shall we say- conservative leaning thirty years ago(Billmon says it best). That Kool-Aid has only gotten worse. Now they're arrogant conservatoids.

Nightmare In The Congo

Darfur is not the only violent hellhole in Africa right now. Please tell Congress to help stop the epidemic of rape and violence in the Congo. Contact Congress today and ask them to pass the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA) immediately.

Photo Link.

Hundreds of women are brutally raped, beaten and killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) every day. On October 31, Senators Joseph Biden (D-DE) and Richard Lugar (R-IN) introduced the International Violence Against Women Act (S.2279) — legislation that will increase protection and services for women and girls facing gender based violence, and will direct more U.S. funding to violence prevention abroad.

PBS | On Our Watch

The rape, killing and genocide continues in Darfur and no one seems to be able to stop it. PBS's Frontline does a nice job of laying out the more horrific details. Here's a clip from youtube:

Warning: disturbing

The world vowed "never again" after the genocide in Rwanda and the atrocities in Srebrenica, Bosnia. Then came Darfur. Over the past four years, at least 200,000 people have been killed, 2.5 million driven from their homes, and mass rape has been used as a weapon in a brutal campaign supported by the Sudanese government.

New York Post Says Two Thirds Of Americans Are Idiots

New York Post headline:
‘BLAME U.S. FOR 9/11′ IDIOTS IN MAJORITY
‘PLOTS’ THICKEN IN SHOCKING POLL

Scripps Howard News Service/Ohio University poll:
Nearly two-thirds of Americans think it is possible that some federal officials had specific warnings of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, but chose to ignore those warnings..

Firedoglake link

Personally I think Dick & dubya were pretty sure something bad was coming. I don't really think they had anything to do with it. I do remember a lot of strange goings on such as officials being warned not to fly commercial, John Ashcroft, etc. They were pretty sure something was gonna happen. BTW what ever happened to that anthrax investigation? Remember the anthrax attacks of Democrats and media? Anyway I agree with the majority on this one.

Repeat After Me: Social Security Is Safe! There Is No Crisis!

Apparently Barack Obama's been drinking the Bushco Kool-Aid regarding Social Security. I thought they put this to rest a few years back. Paul Krugman does a pretty good job of de-bunking the Right's(and Obama's) Social Security talking points:

-
Played for a Sucker

"..But Social Security isn’t a big problem that demands a solution; it’s a small problem, way down the list of major issues facing America, that has nonetheless become an obsession of Beltway insiders. And on Social Security, as on many other issues, what Washington means by bipartisanship is mainly that everyone should come together to give conservatives what they want.."

Touring The Creation Museum

Speaking of Intelligent Design(aka creationism) writer John Scalzi visited the Flintstones..er..The Creation Museum. Of course much snarkiness and fun was had by all. With a mild sounding title simply called:
..
Your Creation Museum Report

"..Indeed, it’s over the top enough that I never could actually get angry with the place. Not that I was planning to; I admit to dreading coming to the place, but that’s primarily because I thought it would bore and annoy me, not make me angry. In fact, I was never bored, and was genuinely annoyed only by the “paleontologist” at the start of the walk-through. The rest of the time I enjoyed it as I suspect anyone who is not some stripe of creationist could enjoy it: As camp. At some point — specifically the part where the Scopes Monkey Trial was presented as the end of decent Christian civilization as we know it — I just started chuckling my way through. By the time I got to the Dinosaur Den, with its placards full of patent misinformation about how soft tissue fossilization strongly suggested a massive, worldwide flood, I was a little loopy. It was just so ridiculous.."

Ernie Fletcher was Kentucky's first Republican governor in over 30 years. While in office Ernie has done his best to show why Republicans have been shut out so long. Indictments, cronyism, crimes and misdemeanors.

Only America-hating traitors believe in due process for journalists

"..the U.S. has tumbled progressively downward in the worldwide press freedom rankings maintained by the widely respected journalist group, Reporters Without Borders. While oppressive countries such as North Korea, Cuba, China, Saudi Arabia and Iran occupy their rightful place at the bottom of the list, the U.S. -- historically at or near the top -- has fallen drastically over the last several years to 53rd place. The U.S. is thus now tied with Botswana and Tonga and well behind El Salvador, Mozambique, Panama, Namibia, Jamaica, Israel and Lithuania. Its practice of arresting journalists and holding them for years with no charges is obviously a significant factor.."

Today's Worst Car Dealer In The World

New candidate! Hands down right now it's the dealer where we bought our latest. If you want a classic case of why car salesmen and car dealers are known as lying, bottom dwelling, A**holes be sure to check out, "World Class Auto Superstore" at Lexington. You buying? You're their best bud, ever! Driven off the lot, and they already have your trade in? They don't know you and won't return your calls. This is the 6th vehicle I've bought in my life and The World Class Auto Superstore is right now diving to the bottom of the bunch(and it's only been 3 days). From lying about the vehicle to no help after, to their hold music which is basically a commercial telling you how much they love their customers and how they're striving to be #1 in "customer service"- as you're on hold fuming 'cause no one there will call or do good by their promises. World Class(a**holes) Auto Superstore, my winner of the sleaziest car dealer in the world. Go by, take a pic, their fame should spread. I'll post on this later to report whether they've taken the name of car dealers to even new lows of suckitude.
