The Golden Age Of Computer-Assisted Reporting

Ramblings from a relocated and under-employed Southeastern Kentuckian. Liberal politics, art, music, movies, books, sports, games, whatever else strikes my fancy....Sad and strange the days that are no more...

From Eat A Peach, this is "Melissa" from the Tom Snyder Show. Far back in time, 1982 I believe. Dinosaurs were disappearing and I was living with the girl I thought I'd love forever. Turns out I did, but it also turns out you can't always hold onto the one you'll love forever..Here's Melissa:
Turn it up;

The new Tom Tomorrow. In this episode our intrepid narrator builds a time machine:
Also from Tom Tomorrow's This Modern World; I have a disagreement with Jonathan Schwarz who says, "Colin Powell Still World's Biggest Asshole". Personally I still believe that "DICK" Dick Cheney is still the world's biggest A-hole and that Powell has only grown from a toady A-hole to a ranking member as the Liberal(sneer) media once again forgets all past history of cable hopping Republican talkers.

I'll tell my Republican friends and family at times about the untrustworthiness of ALL politicians. How they disappoint you again and again. Of course being Republicans they still cannot really bring themselves to criticise Dick and dubya. There is a MAJOR point that I usually make to them towards the end of my rants. Anytime I see this guy:
Cheney insists he is the same person(an evil DICKtard?).
..And realize that we could have had Igor McCain(leading up the rear here):
I'm always brought back to my rejoicing of Nov. 5, 2008 and America's absolute delight that Obama won. There's more reasons each and every day. Here's some of today's reasons:
President Expected to Sign Credit Card Reform Legislation
President Expected to Sign Bill that Addresses Fraudulent Mortgage Lenders and Corporations
Health Care Reform
Obama Administration's National Fuel Efficiency Policy
And today's biggie; Obama strikes back at the Wingnuts:
Obama says US Prisons Tough Enough For Detainees.
Related bit: Video from yesterday's speech regarding Guantanamo prisoners and torture among other things. Good speech:
The one thing about it that I find highly disturbing is his idea(actually a Bush/Cheney idea) of KEEPING some prisoners in a legal no man's land of incarceration with no way out.
I didn't like that from Cheney/Bush and I don't like it from Obama.

"Breathe Deep" from Days of Future Passed. Which I played A LOT back in the day:The clip kind of sucks but I just wanted the Breathe Deep lyricsOn second thought strike that, the clip's not very good. Here's "Tuesday Afternoon" from the same album from a 1970 concert:
You know, if they ever get the internet where you're not having to sit and WAAIITTT on it they'll REALLY have something then.

This sounds pretty good. The Obama/DNC "Organize for Health Care" petition to Congress.
Now if the President and the Congressional Democrats won't allow it to be smothered in it's crib by insurance lobbyists, corporate media, corporate Republicans, etc. Please sign up and hope.
P.S. I'm on a rare visit to the old Blogcenter. Seems like there's more to do when unemployed than when I was working full time.
Maybe I'll start a little "art object item of the week" auction to make a living.
On 40 hits a day!!
I'd starve!
Anyway, it's WAAAAYYYY past time for a decent form of National health insurance. Help make it happen.
Back later(sooner or..)

One other quick note. I see that President Obama just fired the General in charge of the Afghanistan hornet. "..Gates went on to insist on the moral superiority of the American military, whose killing of civilians he described as “accidental” as opposed to “deliberate” killing by the Taliban. He went on to charge that the insurgents “mingle with civilians” and use them as “human shields.” Similar claims have been made by every military power engaged in a dirty colonial-style war.."
Photo here.
It's going to be interesting to see what the "new approach" is and if it'll work. How many of these wars will they have to have(I know, I know, how many wars period) of winning hearts and minds by slaughtering civilians, and then absolving themselves of any blame?
Anyway we'll see what it amounts to. Night all
"..There is overwhelming and irrefutable evidence that the deaths were caused by a US bombardment, including the testimony of survivors as well as photographs and videos that have been taken at the scene, showing demolished houses and villagers picking pieces of US bombs from the rubble.."

You can apparently get cascading YouTube videos now at YooouuuTuuube. Check out the Alice in Wonderland Remix here:
And it's all individual frames. More at LS.
Gonna go play WoW now. Read some news later, and may even be back later tonight.
Another little aside, my oldest daughter came in a few minutes ago and said she was going to have some "moose tracks" ice cream. Which was fine, but I hadn't heard of moose tracks, and I thought she said Moose Crack ice cream. So I go, WHAT, that sounds disgusting!
Well, you had to be there I guess.

Think Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders stopped rocking? Check out this Letterman appearance in '08:
I still remember how shocked I was to find out she's from Akron Ohio...Not that there's anything wrong with Akron..but it's just, well it's Akron. I was amazed. I was thinking she had to be from London England or somewhere. Don't know why.

From Glenn Greenwald comes this clip of the Federal Reserve's "Inspector General" Elizabeth Coleman testifying before the House Financial Services Committee. Her testimony is how they apparently do very little inspecting, and what little they do they won't lower themselves to give results to Rep. Grayson or any other little people. She verbally dances around and says nothing for over 5 minutes.
Hilarious in a head smacking kind of way. These are the people charged with keeping track of your money flowing by the billions to Wall Street, banks and other corporate looters. Take it away "Inspector":

So I'm done with job searches for a while and here's my Thursday video; "The Parting Glass". It's an old Scott/Irish fairwell song that ranks up there with the Robert Burns "Auld Lang Syne". I prefer Sinead O'Conner's version more, but I couldn't find it. Here's the Wailin' Jennys version:
Of all the money e'er I had,-
I spent it in good company.
And all the harm I've ever done,
Alas! it was to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit
To mem'ry now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all

Being a wanna be landscape painter myself, I'm a big fan of Stephen Howell of Lexington. Steve's not only a friend but someone who's work I admire a lot.
With a little bit realism, a little bit impressionism, and a mix of other styles in his work. With a use of light and color I admire greatly Steve's an artist that should be in lots of galleries around town and around the state.
If he were more interested in showing and advertising his work and weren't tied to the "9 to 5" ball and chain I think he would be.
Below is a image of his latest(unfinished) work, in oil, of a frozen in time waterfall in Kentucky's Red River Gorge.
Now speaking of "9 to 5" I'm off to check out a few more job sites myself. I may get to read some news and be back later.

My favorite astronomy pic of late is of NGC 4676, commomly called "two mice" because of the long tails. I think they could have also called it "two sperm", but that wouldn't be quite as nice would it?
Extremely basic info: Two galaxies passing through each other, colliding, colliding and eventually merging.
"The long tails are created by the relative difference between gravitational pulls on the near and far parts of each galaxy. Because the distances are so large, the cosmic interaction takes place in slow motion -- over hundreds of millions of years. NGC 4676 lies about 300 million light-years away.."

Our Vice President, as everyone probably knows by now, has a-shall we say-habit sometimes of speaking before his brain is in gear. It's sometimes endearing, sometimes annoying, and sometimes frightening.
A perfect example is his rambling about the swine flu and how to stay safe. This Modern World does a review and it's pretty close(or seems to be) to Joe's version.
