Shell and Exxon to smash transatlantic profit records

OIL companies on both sides of the Atlantic will gush record profits this week, with America’s Exxon Mobil posting the world’s biggest-ever profit, and Shell setting a new record for British companies.
Exxon is tomorrow expected to unveil a profit of about $32 billion (£18 billion) for 2005, according to Thomson Financial. It will be the largest single profit in the history of corporate America.

It shatters last year’s previous record for a company of $25 billion, set by Texas-based Exxon, the world’s largest listed oil company, and easily trumps the benchmark $22.1 billion made by Ford in 1998.
On Thursday Shell will top record-setting results with an estimated profit of $23 billion for 2005. This is up nearly a third from 2004, when its profits were $17.6 billion, at the time the biggest by a British company.
BP is expected to continue the trend on February 7 by revealing full-year profits estimated at $21.7 billion. This contrasts with earnings of $16.4 billion in 2004.
Oil-company profits, driven by the surging price of oil and gas, have drawn criticism as the cost of petrol remains high and domestic-heating bills soar.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition is an international organization of cops, district attorneys, judges, corrections officers and others who oppose the war on drugs.
I've lost a few friends to prohibition, people who took unknown street drugs and overdosed as a result, and I lived in a crack neighborhood for years in San Francisco. Though I don't take narcotics (I did when I was younger, but ran out of time to indulge in either liquor or drugs when my life got very busy in my mid-twenties) I believe that prohibition of drugs leads to far worse evils that even the abuse of drugs engender.

I further believe that the war on drugs criminalizes otherwise law-abiding people and forces them into criminal contexts to engage in something that is intended only to change their own mental state. Finally, I believe that the law has no business telling adults which chemicals they can take to change what and how they think.

After nearly four decades of fueling the U.S. policy of a war on drugs with over half-a-trillion tax dollars and increasingly punitive policies, our confined population has quadrupled over a 20 years period making building prisons this nation's fastest growing industry. More than 2.2 million of our citizens are currently incarcerated and every year we arrest an additional 1.6 million for nonviolent drug offenses‹more per capita than any country in the world. The United States has 4.6 percent of the population of the world but 22.5 percent of the world's prisoners. Every year we choose to continue this war will cost U.S. taxpayers another 69 billion dollars. Despite all the lives we have destroyed and all the money so ill spent, today illicit drugs are cheaper, more potent, and far easier to get than they were 35 years ago at the beginning of the war on drugs. Meanwhile, people continue dying in our streets while drug barons and terrorists continue to grow richer than ever before. We would suggest that this scenario must be the very definition of a failed public policy. This madness must cease!

Charges: A mustache only slightly less loathsome than Tom Friedman’s-if only because fewer people take Rivera seriously. Began his career as a seemingly skilled and passionate muckraker, but having been exposed countless times as a shameless, megalomaniacal fraud, he absolutely refuses to get out of our living rooms. Most recently, Geraldo was accused of making a frail, elderly victim of Hurricane Katrina whom he “rescued” do multiple takes of the rescue scene with Rivera for Fox News cameras. Geraldo heroically carried the woman’s dog.

Exhibit A: Claims he defected from CNBC to Fox News for patriotic reasons.

Sentence: Sealed inside Al Capone’s vault with a phalanx of Neo-nazis armed with folding chairs.

49. Michelle Malkin
Charges: A curious case of racial Stockholm syndrome with a palpable lust for violent ideological oppression and displays of imperial power. Rose to prominence in conservative circles by congratulating white America for its most shameful chapter since slavery, and encouraging a return to form in her book, In Defense of Internment: The Case for “Racial Profiling” in World War II and the War on Terror. Malkin thinks it’s hunky-dory to detain an entire demographic indefinitely if it makes the rest of us feel more comfortable. Her newest, Frenzy, argues that liberals have lost their minds, because they are upset with the direction their country is taking. Her evidence is a carefully collected selection of the dumbest things liberals have ever said, as if she couldn’t have just as easily filled an entire library with the insane ravings of right-wingers. Her accusations of blind hatred and vitriol mimic soul sister Ann Coulter’s classic tactic of psychological projection: whatever Malkin is, she sees in her opponents.

Exhibit A: Internment was so irresponsible that it prompted 40 history professors to sign a letter condemning it.

Sentence: Detained indefinitely without charge and waterboarded hourly for looking at a cop “all slanty-like.”

48. Larry the Cable Guy
Charges: The absolute nadir of the American South’s baffling cultural hegemony. A middle-class Nebraskan, raised in Palm Beach, whose parents sent him to private school, masquerading as an Appalachian mutant and making millions off the nine-toed cyclopes in his audience by calling his material “blue collar,” when it’s really just a celebration of proud ignorance. The latest in a long line of “entertainers” propagating the lie that real talent is elitist. The South has risen again—just long enough to grab the rest of the nation by the legs and pull it back down to its Lovecraftian depths. Isn’t even “bad funny.” Makes Jeff Foxworthy look like Chris Rock.

Exhibit A: Ostensibly ‘humorous’ catchphrase translates into “complete the task.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of President Bush playing politics with his spying caper.

He’s at it again this week, trying to turn his breaking the law into a political attack against Democrats.

And we hear the same old crap, over and over again: September 11! War on Terror! Do what we gotta do! September 11! War on terror!

You know, it’s all one big pack of lies.

The truth is: George W. Bush is an outlaw president.

He has zero regard for the law.

Zero regard for the Constitution.

Zero regard for the American people.

He thinks, and he acts, like September 11 made him a dictator. Or King. Or God!

He honestly believes he’s above the law, which makes him worse than Richard Nixon. Nixon only tried to cover up breaking the law. George Bush brags about it.

Now it’s up to us – to make sure he doesn’t get away with it.

No exaggeration. I think this is the biggest Constitutional crisis of our lifetime, and we have to decide: Are we suckers, or citizens?

Will we surrender our rights and freedoms to a tin-horn dictator who uses his self-declared “war on terror” to trash the Constitution?

Or will we stand up and fight for our freedoms?

No exaggeration. The future of America depends on whether we have the balls to make the right decision.

To me, the choice is clear.

We must resist this presidential grab of power.

We must repudiate this tyrant George W. Bush.

And there’s only one way to do it:

First, in November, put Democrats back in control of Congress.

And then, as soon as possible thereafter – impeach the bastard!

sociopathic hubris, taunted the insurgency with the three words that should
be chiseled in disgrace on the wall of his future presidential library:
"Bring 'em on." According to a recent poll, 55% of Americans no longer
believe the war with Iraq was worth fighting. Are the majority of Americans "defeatniks"? If so, I must be more
influential than I thought."

Do you remember how you feared for your family's life as your television sold you a bill of goods about these Anthrax letters, reportedly sent by Arabs?

Do you remember how Anthrax was on television, in magazines, in newspapers; seemingly downloaded into your brain at almost every moment of your waking day-- for months? According to a LexisNexis search conducted by TomDispatch.com, "between Oct. 4 and Dec. 4, 2001, 389 stories appeared in the New York Times with "anthrax" in the headline." During the same period, 238 "anthrax" stories appeared in the Washington Post. Think about that for a second. Now consider the noise made by all the other media outlets. Now add all that noise together. That's a lot of noise.

These days though, the silence is deafening.

But here is the real gist of it all:

All the anthrax used in the various anthrax attacks in 2001 came from a United States military base. They all came from the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), Fort Detrick, Maryland. But there were two separate mailings of anthrax letters. One batch of letters was mailed on or about September 18, 2001. This batch went to various media outlets and contained cutaneous anthrax (Ames Strain).

Then on or about October, 9, 2001, the second batch of letters was mailed out. This batch contained a much more lethal "weaponized version" of the Ames strain. These letters were sent to two Democratic Senators.

Hydrocarbon analysis showed that all of the anthrax found in the letters was incubated within two years of the time it was mailed.

A Few More Things to Make Your Head Spin
1. Members of the White House (including Bush, Cheney, and the Cabinet) were given the antibiotic CIPRO on September 11, 2001-- seven (7) days prior to the date the first anthrax letter was even mailed. (I wasn't aware that antibiotics could save you from a jumbo jet smashing into your building, cool!)

2. Even after it was determined that the only anthrax to ever be used in a terrorist attack against American citizens came from our own military base, the Bush administration had Colin Powell waving around a vial of faux-anthrax at the United Nations in February of 2003. We invaded and occupied Iraq because, as Colin Powell stated that day, "Saddam Hussein has not verifiably accounted for even one teaspoon-full of this deadly material". (Considering that it was our own anthrax that was used against us in the 2001 anthrax letters, isn't this statement

I laugh about it.

I like to kid about how, when I was in college, it wasn't unusual for me and my friends to cut and clear so much "brush" that, by the next day, we couldn't even remember where we cut that brush.

Sometimes, we'd wind up, in the early hours of the morning, holding onto a toilet, just vomitting up all the "brush" we had "cut". That's called "clearing" "brush", I guess. Once, I "cut" so much "brush", I got stomped by a pair of giant Samoan bouncers outside the Allen Room on College Avenue.

Apparently, they preferred that I just "trim" the "brush" and not "cut" so much. Fucking tree-huggers.

And me and my friends would get up the next day, after "cutting" and "clearing" so much "brush", and we'd literally stink of "brush". No amount of toothpaste or mouthwash could get the taste of "brush" out of our mouths.

But that didn't stop us from going out again that night for a "bike ride"!

And, it goes without saying, we "rode" our "bikes" hard, sometimes even passing out from a long "bike" "ride".

I joke about it.

I like to point out that there are only two kinds of grownups in modern American life who show up in public with as many contusions, lacerations, and bruises on their faces on such a regular basis as George W. Bush:

1. Prizefighters; and

2. Falling down drunks.

Though, to be fair, maybe rodeo clowns and women married to Bob Dornan do as well.

But I'm completely serious about it. And anybody who just didn't wake up on Earth yesterday should be, too.

The dude is a serious boozer. He hasn't given up shit.

"...There's the ethical issues with this so-called journalist hanging out in (and helping with) such a blatantly partisan event. It's again obvious that his schmoozing with the rich and powerful have hampered his ability to commentate on those issues properly detached and rational. He's been co-opted by the DeLay/Abramoff machine.

Combined, those two issues make it painfully obvious why Matthews is completely uncredible to discuss this issue. Of course, this being the modern media at work, he'll continue to play his role in efforts to explain and obfuscate this scandal away..."
