America | The New Torture Poll

58%-40% of Americans say no to torture in a new Washington Post/ABC News poll which was released yesterday

Glenn Greenwald:
By a wide margin -- 58-40% -- Americans say that torture should never be used, no matter the circumstances. Let's repeat that: "no matter the circumstance." That margin is enormous among Democrats (71-28%) and substantial among independents (56-43%). As usual these days, Republicans hold the minority view, but even among them there is substantial categorical opposition to torture (42-55%).

No matter the circumstances? Let terrorists start blowing up American malls and see how long that lasts.

That's right Anon
"No matter the circumstances!" When the terrorists start "blowing up" American malls(why malls?) then get back to me.
As for the torture, if you were as smart as you think you are, or as smart as 58% of Americans you'd know that torture doesn't work as a method of getting reliable information. Only in the twisted minds of little sadists, Torquemada and dubya for example. Never has been, and never will be a good thing. No matter what you Fox watchers see on "24"
Hey, by the by, what's on Faux "News" this morning.

Don't know about Fox because I don't have cable--five channels enough for me. Plenty of dis-agreement about whether "torture" works. Have you noticed that even Obama won't rule it out on ticking bomb scenarios? That's why I brought up malls. Bring suicide bombings to America and watch those polls change.

Actually there's not that much disagreement about whether "torture" works. The poll once again(and this is from Americans who get very little truth or facts from corporate media) was 58%-40%. Much higher among Democrats and Independents, the non-Fox news watching section of society, that's why I brought up Faux and naturally assumed you were a, let's say, rightward Republican.
As to that "24" show, "ticking time bomb" scenario it's not going to be like a tv show-it never is.
Regarding Obama he's already stated that the army field manual must be followed. Which effectively rules out torture. Could he be lying? Yes, but I doubt it. About this anyway.
Now obviously bringing suicide bombings to America would change those numbers. Would that make torture right? No. Would it make torture more effective as an information gathering tool? No. will I explain why? No. I don't have the time, but someone who knows what pain can do, and has done any study of history, inquisitions, World War II, etc. shouldn't have to be told WHY torture doesn't work. Even leaving out the ethical, "we'd be as bad as they are" side of it.
