Four thoughts:
-Fiscal conservatism is about both spending and debt.
-Military expenditures were the biggest part of Reagan's "problem" here and Clinton's "success".
-After Reagan, in terms of spending Clinton and Bush I are equivalent; Bush II and his Congresses are the biggest spenders since at least LBJ.
-Along those lines, spending and debt has gone a long way toward devaluing the dollar by 40% since 2002. This is, interestingly, the number one reason for much higher gas prices! Without that, we'd be paying less than $3 per gallon.
Regarding gas prices I saw somewhere(I know) that oil speculators have an affect of about $1.00 per gal. on gas prices.
