Fletcher backer's firm gets contract
FRANKFORT - The state Transportation Cabinet has awarded a contract worth up to $100,000 to the Frankfort law firm of Larry Forgy, who has been one of Gov. Ernie Fletcher's most vocal supporters.

The Government Contract Review committee considered the personal-service contract yesterday for Forgy. It was one of 35 legal contracts worth $3.5 million from the cabinet that the panel questioned.

Two members of the committee voted for the 35 contracts, while six declined to vote. However, the contracts will go forward. If they had received a majority of "no" votes, they would have gone to the state Finance Cabinet for further consideration.

Sen. Ernesto Scorsone, D-Lexington, raised concerns at yesterday's meeting about the contracts, particularly the one for Forgy.

"Sounds like we are doing some business for the governor's friends," Scorsone said.

Forgy, a Republican who unsuccessfully ran for governor in 1995, has publicly defended Fletcher and his GOP administration throughout the lengthy investigation of hiring practices in state government.
