From The Humane Society-Stop the slaughter of baby seals

A three-year programme to slaughter more than a million seals in Canada, to protect fish stocks, has been branded cruel and without scientific justification by the ISPCA.

The devastating cull involves seals being shot and clubbed by hunters, then skinned - possibly while still alive. The total quota issued by the Canadian government includes 975,000 harp seals and 30,000 hooded seals.

Canada clearly states its aim is to reduce seal numbers believing they are responsible for the fall in fish stocks. The government also claims the hunt is providing a valuable income for 12,000 sealers living in eastern Canada.

The ISPCA is calling for an end to the barbaric killing, which will run for six months this year.

When the 2006 Canadian seal hunt ended in June, hunters had killed more than 336,000 seal pups -- almost all of them babies as young as 12 days old. While the tragedy of the 2006 seal hunt can never be undone, our campaign to ensure that it was the last hunt we’ll ever have to witness is quickly gaining momentum. Today, you can help us end the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet by signing our pledge to boycott Canadian seafood.
Click here to sign the pledge, and we'll let you know how to make the right choice when purchasing seafood. The Humane Society of the United States is on the front lines every year in Canada, fighting to halt this atrocity. You can help with your simple pledge to keep the pressure on the Canadian government and on the fishing industry that profits from the slaughter of the seals.

Sign the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood.Seal hunting is an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada's east coast. They earn, on average, a small fraction of their incomes from seal hunting -- the rest comes from commercial fisheries. Canada takes in nearly $3 billion annually from seafood exports to the United States. The connection between the commercial fishing industry and the seal hunt in Canada gives consumers all over the world the power to end the vicious slaughter of seals.
Pass the pledge to friends.Canada is sensitive to world opinion, and its fishing industry is vulnerable to the choice of hundreds of thousands of people to refuse to buy Canadian seafood. Each and every person who signs the pledge will increase the pressure on Canada. Click here to ask your friends and family to sign the pledge. After you've signed the pledge and helped spread the word, you can stay in touch with our ongoing efforts to end the seal hunt at:
